This video shows the potential problems, and fixes for a P1706. This is not a common code in my experience. When I do see it one of the first things I try is an adjustment, which is covered in this video.

Are the range switch and neutral safety switch the same thing? On my Canadian built 2007 I occasionally get no start until I move the gear shift from P to N and back. I thought I’d remove the neutral safety switch, disassemble it and clean the contacts, reassemble and reinstall; but the Canadian builds have the cable attached not a connector on the switch, and it’s snaked up to a difficult spot to reach and disconnect.
Glad to see you back up and running … But I wish my range sensor was – in fact – just the range sensor 😅 … Great insight!!
Great to have you back . I remember you saying you were happy to have a car lift ,at the old shop ,now its the new shop,
Hi Eric. I have a 2008 Element SC. I’ve owned it for 2 weeks. Just replaced with Power Stop rotors, calipers and pads. I’ve bled them twice and still have spongy pedal.
Advice, bleed ABS?
#2. Do you always use HONDA brand fluids? Oil filter, etc.? I’m 78 and an amputee. Trying to make it safe and dependable. Thank you.
Had this exact issue on my TL-S. If I remember correctly, the manual tells you to put the transmission in neutral and install the switch so that the slot within the large nut is straight up and down. I’m thinking this transmission was designed to be adjusted the same way.
That ofther mechanical was crooked lol. He looks family.ummmm scottt kilmer with a beard. All love for scotty. It be neat is scotty eric can do a video or whatever.
Its all about the pilots!!!!!
My 2003 Subaru Legacy does the same exact thing, followed Eric's steps and BOOM BABY it's FIXED with $0 invested.. LOL, love you man.
9:22 Viofo dashcam bootup sound
Too many pilots not a single plane in sight.😅😂
P0706 pops up on my 8th gen Civic, sometimes. It's a check engine light, D light works most of the time.
Our 2002 Odessey's "N" light does not illuminate since the transmission was replaced, but I've never had a code either? Would this adjustment still do the trick?
My 2007 Odyssey had an issue at about 230K where the car would not start unless it was in neutral. I ended up just replacing the whole range switch and it fixed the problem.
Hello ericthecarguy please can you make a video for honda accord 1996 2.2l with the code p0715 problem and how you fix it ok and thank you in advance
YEA! Fixing stuff!
makes more sense to use "N", its closer to the middle of its travel. I use it for adjusting shift cables as well.
Thank you Eric I enjoyed watching your video very educational watching from South Africa
I am glad you are back in the swing of things.
thanks Eric
Be a man drive a manual… simple
I was just wondering what model of Autel scanner do you have? I'm looking for one but don't know what's out there that's good but not crazy expensive. Thanks for the video too btw 🤙ðŸ½ðŸ˜‰
I had this happen with a 2011 Chevy Malibu but the owner constantly uses the car and won't bring it back for me to fix it!… Lol the damn thing won't set a check engine light so it passes inspection, starts and drives… But if I scan it the code is in there!… crazy!…. Oh well as long as it goes it's good..😅😂🤣
Service info says to put the transmission and the switch into Neutral when installing.
I had a similar issue but no check engine light, my issue was intermittent no start. When I switch it to Neutral it would start. Replaced switch problem fixed. 07 Pilot 235k
Thank you! Always a joy.
When is the supercharger going on the Pilot?
Hai! That's some good information and something I'm going to keep an eye on with my pilot in the future. That being said, I'm curious if my pilot will make the same weird sounds when i go to shift the vehicle out of reverse. I'll post my own video regarding that here in a day or so and tag you in it if you like so you can listen for yourself. Also, you could get a quick look at basically your pilot's twin for the first time (mine is an 04 with seats out of an '08…that was a project)
Take care and keep up the awesome work my friend!
Should you be able to "wiggle" the shift handle that much??
That flashing CEL you note is actually not because of the shifter. It's a normal indicator when the emissions monitors are not set (because you cleared the codes). It will stay on solid for a while in the on position, and then after a while it will blink 5 times. Once the emissions monitors are set, it will not flash anymore and will just go off after bulb check is complete.
Hi Eric,
I have the same year Honda Pilot. It start showing the left rear subframe rust. I just start learning how to do welding. Do you think I should fix the Pilot or let someone do it?
Thanks
Hi Eric, is the range switch on this transmission a sealed unit? I noticed four or five Phillips screws on it and wondered if removing those screws exposes the contacts inside the switch and maybe if you had those contacts exposed with that be more helpful in helping to adjust the position of the switch as you move the shifter? Otherwise, if you make an adjustment one way to fix the drive position, but you throw off another, there’s a risk that you’ll get stuck in an endless loop. But I guess maybe at that point you might go out and buy a new switch.
We've had relatively the same problem on FFVs at the Post Office. Vehicle wouldn't start in park or neutral, but would crank in reverse (obviously scared the carrier). Quick adjustment underneath of the range switch and back to working condition.
Ford vehicles require adjustment in neutral, they even have mark on switch to line up in neutral
Hey Eric, love you vids.
I have a question about my 2008 Civic LX Manual 149,000 miles. I am religous about oil changes and the other fuild. Has never overheated. I have an annoying engline shake after the car is at operating temp. I can feel in the drivers seat pretty good. RPMs are steady at around 675, which I feel are a little low. If I tap the gas and bring the RPMs up then its smooth. Within the last 18 months, I have changed out all 4 mount with OEM, spark plugs (NGK) and coils (denso), EGR, MAF and an intake infusion (mechanic said there was lots of carbon buildup) as well as numerous fuel injection cleaners. Nothing has helped. Have you ever run into this with the Civic's?
Always useful
Good stuff! Yeah when those range selectors were adjustable they were always a bit of a headache with temperature change or as the contacts wore a little bit with time.
I had this and a no shift situation on a 2007 Toyota Matrix.. I was out on a trip, so I stopped at a Walmart and bought crc contact cleaner and blasted the part and harness connection, and it's worked fine ever since…. Hope this helps someone…
What a stupid design. It should not be that hard to adjust something.
Seems like a bad design to me.
Im a Lexus master tech and I normally get a code for that on the GX. When I check the switch, I'll look in my data list to see if I have a D signal. After replacement, I'll check to see if my N signal is on and adjust accordingly. You see a line on the range position switch (or Park/Neutral switch as commonly referred to) that lines up when the shift left is put into the N position. My thought process is, if the computer can see the N signal and allows the vehicle to start, the switch is properly adjusted
