A Good Day at a Bad Auction - Old Tractors,

Hilarie and I are at the the estate auction of Joe Nogle, in Geneva, New York. There are over 100 classic tractors of all colors here. Sounds like a great auction, right?

  1. I'm adjusting my previous comment: most of the tractors in this sale have moved from being tractors someone will buy because they need a small tractor to the collector tractor market. The trouble is, the largest population of people that grew up using these tractors, and have memories of them they want to preserve are now passing on. That is shrinking the market for these tractors and only the best that have been kept up bring decent prices. We see the same thing happening for the cars from the late 30's to the mid 1950's. Some really well kept examples bring great prices, especially the ones with a hot rod history. But the rest are now just bringing old car prices, which isn't near what they were worth 15-20 years ago. Many baby boomer collectors that are now reaching their 80's are seeing their prized possessions loose much of the value they once had because the market is collapsing for all but the very unique and well preserved examples. And before someone points to a Barrett -Jackson sales, keep in mind how many of the cars that pass over the auction block that ultimately go back home after paying that 10% commission trying to get an unreasonable price.

  2. 2008-2020 was a period of zero interest at national banks. Every old piece of metal was a potential investment. That's behind us, now inflation kills any expendable income. Lots of markers are collapsing.

  3. Im glad Im not the only one who thought this whole auction was odd. Sitting inside, no ringmen, no nothing. No excitement no nothing. Jumbled up flyer with no logical way to navigate it. They def left alot of money on the table selling all this stuff.

  4. This scenario is not realistic! With Buyer Premiums added and Minimums not met, there are no longer any "cheap" pricing.
People need to wise up! An Auction is designed to sell unwanted or previously unsold items.
