Like many young girls, 13-year-old Ariel loved Disney princesses when she was growing up. She even asked her family to call her by a different Disney princess’s name every day: Cinderella. Belle. Snow White.

But for Ariel, her family’s willingness to call her by those names had special significance: she was born a boy. And at the time — around age nine — she was still presenting as a boy at school and in public, fearful of what the reaction of her peers might be if they knew she identified as a girl.

Ariel shares her story in “Growing Up Trans,” a documentary coming to FRONTLINE (PBS) on June 30. The 90-minute special follows eight kids who are transitioning, ranging from ages 9 to 19 — and shows how a new generation of kids and their parents are navigating the changing and complicated world of gender and identity, with new medical options and at younger and younger ages.

  1. I am so disgusted by parents who condonde the notion of being a transgender kid is ok. These 'YOUR''
kids are in their frame of reference. Playing father and mother, or doctor and patient are role playing games
to learn about the world! and you dickheads rob them of their childhood. Even in anno 1000 a girl of 12 years
might be considered ready for marriage when she first bleeded down there, and in the times we are living in
now 18 years is considered to be an adult age. Even young people of 21 can't get a frikking beer in a café or
club in the States and you evil parents who have no clue how to raise kids to be emotionally rich and intelligent human beings,
because you probably didn't had a good home, are closing your eyes for this next generation.
You will pay for everything you do to your childeren. God sees everything.
You might wanna look at stories of teenagers who are sorry and sad because they made the wrong choice.
IF you have any experience in life you know that people often think the opposite when they grow up or when time passes,
YOU parents have made an life altering decision for your own flesh and blood that will affect them for the rest of their life.
They will break contact with you and commit suicide, many will, I can tell you that. Every human being should have a
pure and rich sexual life and you destroyed that parents of transgender kids…….

  2. Ariel is so beautiful! You are a princess, and you will grow up to be a beautiful queen who finds happiness one day. You deserve it.

I’m also so relieved and surprised at all the positive comments here! Especially since most of them are from 3-4 years ago! I’m glad to see so many people supporting Miss Ariel, keep it up!

  3. Trying to figure out what happened to Ariel. She was 13 when this aired in 2015. Now 20-21. Anyone know how’s she’s doing? @frontlinepbs

  4. I saw Ariels other documentary with other children . Growing up trans. & other documentaries & I just want to say , Well I just love Ariel. & I support her 100%. She's amazing & Beautiful !!! I support them all & their families.

  5. Girl is girl. Everyone is totally unique by genetics. Love yourself, be happy. Just complete the own transformer thing. Save u save me save all. 👼

  6. These young people want to be part of the victim class because it gives them an identity and makes them feel like they belong to a community. You see this so commonly in young white men because they are explicitly excluded from the victim class. Parents need to not buy their children phones or tablets until they have a driver's license.

  7. I am a trans woman as well and I fully support her… I just wish I could have transitioned earlier in life like she did, but we didn't have any role models my age around at that time.
