Blown Engine--Broken Rod ! Autopsy 3.6 Pentastar Ram Jeep Chrysler

Not long ago we looked at this engine to diagnose a misfire on cold start. Low compression was found on cylinder 3 and it had a light misfire. The van returned with broken connecting rod, holes in the engine block.as well as evidence that all four valves made contact with the piston which also broke in half in the cylinder. The head has to be removed to find out more!

  1. That engine seems like a beast though it has a few more moving parts(rockers) than I like. But, all that elaboration and then leaving some stupid bug like a pattern head gasket weakness or water pump O'ring would be really stupid. Something this extravagant is not something you quit at 90%. You go all the way debugging everything.

  2. You may also look further up the food chain. I'm talking about the intake manifold, in particular an EGR port if applicable. I had a Buick 4.1 that swallowed a bunch of coolant through that route. Same symptoms but that was a real American made car, that could swallow 😮😮😮😮

  3. My take is warped head, causing coolant to seep in the cylinder and causing a hydro lock condition.

The reason I think the head was warped, is because the one bolt wouldn’t come off. He switched to the other end, removed the second last bolt, and went back to the one that wouldn’t come off, and it then came off easily. Indicating warpage in my opinion.

  4. Since the head gasket showed no signs of failure, my guess is that the aftermarket injector failed and stuck open causing a hydro-lock condition. That explains the clean piston.

  5. Man I loved this …the thing I love about Ray is he doesnt just say " This is broke lets fix it." He looks to see why and how do we prevent it from happening again. Not too many mechanics do this any more …most shops are assembly lines in fix out…..Great job Ray.

  6. With current technology for casting and machining aluminum these days I wonder why heads and block aren't cast as a single unit. It would eliminate head gaskets and their failure and simplify factory assembly. Engine would be built from top down rather than bottom up. Valves inserted first, then pistons, and lastly crank shaft.
