Brand New Piglets! Small Farm Sunday

We have a litter of brand new piglets, born yesterday! It’s Small Farm Sunday, and I spend some time with Mom and piglets talking about how we raise pastured pigs, how we farrow our sows, and how to raise pigs from birth through butcher.

Note:
-We do not offer farm tours
-We do not ship our farm’s products

  1. Our pig just had 13 piglets. She is a free range sow and forages for much of her food, we do supplement with corn and commercial feed during winter months. I thought it was an interesting difference you noted that your sows do not eat for 2-3 days after farrowing. I took a bucket of feed to her while she was drinking from the pond, she ate quite a bit of it then went to drink more water and went back to mommy duties. We’ll continue to supplement her feed in the next few weeks as she needs the support. Neat to see how y’all do it!

  2. I don't know if you get to read some of my comments so I try to put it on what comes out early that you can read it I don't know that you go way back when I get to see the videos but I need to let you know thank you for your jokes I think my neighbors think that I'm crazy because I'll been laughing so hard because it doesn't make sense from time the joke just don't make no sense at all but it be so funny I cannot help laughing Especially when I'm down-and-out your jokes was always there for me thank you so much make God-bless you continually

  3. Have you tried diatomaceous earth for deworming? We've found it to be really good for all sorts of things (don't know about your situation though…)
Also, it tends to be better for soil microbes and dung beetles.

  4. I don't think you have mentioned what breed your pigs are. Maybe you can do a video about why you chose this breed, like those you have done about your Dexter cattle.

  5. Pete, how much are piglets (price range)? I saw the video where you stated that the piglets were $75 if I recall correctly. Is this typical for most/all piglets? Are meat pigs more/less than breeder piglets?

Can I raise two piglets, or do they need a larger group to be happy?

  6. Worked in a piggery 50 yrs ago, ,, , far different than these pigs ,, ,, first thing was to clip teeth and give them as injection,, and from day one they were given dry food to eat,,, ,,, wean at 5 weeks then the sow comes in season ,,, by weaning she will have 5 litters in 2 years ,, Boars are no longer cut in Australia , they go to the meatworks at a certain weight for pork ,, PS and if the pigs are to fat you get a penalty ,,

  7. What about iron for the piglets? If they are NOT on dirt they don't get the same minerals from nursing teats that have dirt on them and sometimes the piglets don't do well, die even, for lack of iron. How are you addressing this issue?
