In this video I have a look at a 2017 Buick Encore with the big 1.4 that came in with a customer complaint of the engine light being on. Customer also mentioned car won’t start after he gets gas and it is littered with lean codes. I have a pretty good suspicion as to what’s going on here. Let’s have a look. -Enjoy!

  1. GM, Ford use to build reliable, quality turbo 4 cylinder vehicles decades ago. I owned a new 1985 Pontiac Sunbird 2.0 turbo. Had it for 2 years. . 80,000 miles and hardly regular oil changes. Like it should have. 85% highway use. The car had zero issues whatsoever. My brother had a 1987 Ford 4 cylinder Turbo coupe i4 engine.. Sliky smooth and zero issues. But now todays GM, Ford, Stelonis 4 cylinder turbo engines are pure Disposable TRASH. Outsourced parts from every 3rd world toilet bowl country. So you wonder why they're Purposeful Disposable TRASH. LONG RELIABILITY is Gone in all Manufacturers. Even Honda, Toyota, Lexus make turbo trash CVT's Ill keep my 1997 Buick Lesebre

  2. Common failures I seen on this motor. Turbo seizes up causing under boost code p0299. Tip to be sure is to undo the band clamp and unbolt the bracket holding the cat to the turbo. Then stick your fingers to find the turbo turbine and see if it spins. Most of the time it's seized up or rocking loose. It should spin freely with no play. Next is the Valve cover with the built in PCV valve. The diaphragm tears causing a p0171 and Intake / map sensor performance codes. When that goes you also going to have to replace the intake manifold too since there is a rubber check ball that leaves its home and gets sucked into the motor which doesn't damage the motor at all but it will ruin a new valve cover PCV valve due to too much vacuum. Next is I always seen a leaking purge valve. The test would be to disconnect the power wire and take the input side off the purge valve leave it connected to the intake. Start the car at idle and take your finger and plug the port on the purge valve. If you got suction on there the valve is leaking. The check valve on that will close under boost you may not even see a Purge flow detected during non purge code.

  3. PCV is a real part in that engine, there are two, PVC polyvinyl chloride is the pipe material…
That said it part of the oil system and not the fuel. 👍

  4. What scan tool is that you are using? I tried the links but couldn't see that one. Looks super usefull, hopefully it does the same thing with my toyota.

  5. The main reason for the frequent turbo failures is related to the oil feed line getting cooked by the exhaust manifold especially while using the stop/start sequence. Then the turbo is replaced without replacing the oil feed line and it happens again

  6. Eric, Royalty Auto service just did a video on a case where the vehicle had a few odd running problems, and the end cause of it all was because the customer filled their gas tank too much, as in, past where the pump nozzle clicks off. The video was two days ago if you wanna check it out.

  7. Took my 2017 Buick encore to the dealership today. It’s been hard starting for months. They didn’t mention any codes and said it “may be” the starter but won’t know until they replace it and go from there. I saw there was a recall for purge valves. Is there a chance the hard start is the purge valve (if fueling up is not a factor)? They said they rarely have to replace starters so I don’t feel super reassured. Parts are back ordered for starter with no ETA due to GM strike. 😢 any thoughts or recommendations?

  8. Im not a mechanic..took my '17 encore to dealer with this problem..after they replaced the catalytic converter and intake manifold for $2700.00 and it didnt fix the problem, i did my own research and came to the same conclusion you did. replaced the purge valve for cheap and im now gtg. Lost faith in either their greadiness, or just their lack of using common sense instead of just being parts changers, im learning as much as i can about cars and doing things myself now..buying tools as needed isnt a big deal as you save a ton by doing it yourself and have a tool for other future problems.

  9. Buick Encores seem to be notorious for purge Valve issues. I have a 2021, I just replaced mine. Tons of issues and bought it with 4,000 miles on it.

So many issues.. steering column went out, the fan went, and now this purge valve. Oh, and the jack is crap too.

The turbos I have heard go out in them too. I'm crossing my fingers praying no turbo issues before I trade mine in. These cars are Lemons.

I'm not sure why the purge valve isn't a recall.

  10. I think this might be the problem I'm having. I put a new (Standard # CP469) one on just 9631 miles ago (2years). Is it possible to take it out and spray some throttle body cleaner in it to get it unstuck? Maybe I'll also disconnect that EVAP line back at the box and blow the line out with compressed air? Or just buy an (AC Delco # 214646) from Mexico for $5.00 more? I'm a parts changer by the way … 🤔

  11. This happened with my 08 G6, it was my purge solenoid, much easier to change then the charcoal canister, it was stuck open making the car really hard to start after getting gas and idling horribly for about 5 minutes.

  12. I know this is an older video but I have a question. First I’ve never touch a Buick in my years of working on cars so I’m a little lost here. I ended up replacing that part I did notice a little fuel on the line and my thought was fuel pressure regulator. Im getting 50 psi in fuel rails and all my injectors are working. In idle the car bogs down but at high rpm and driving it’s fine so I don’t think it’s the fuel pump. Any ideas?

  13. Found oem purge valve at Rockauto, $26.79 back in april, however didnt fix the money light (P0442). It runs fine and passed emissions test. Told wife dont look at the money light!
