A firestorm has been raging on many American college campuses over the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza and in some places, devolving into hate-filled rhetoric and arrests. FRONTLINE and Retro Report have been following the escalating turmoil since the war began — talking to people on all sides of the divide, investigating how universities have responded, how powerful interests joined the fray, and how the conflict over the conflict ultimately spiraled out of control.

The resulting documentary, “Crisis on Campus,” offers an incisive look at mounting tensions at some of the nation’s most elite institutions, including Columbia and Harvard universities, which have been the focus of intense debate. The documentary features revealing interviews with students and faculty at Harvard and Columbia, as well as other key players in Washington and beyond. It examines how university leaders, some of whom have faced congressional hearings, navigated the challenges of responding to heated rhetoric and division on their campuses and balancing free speech with the need to prevent harassment and discrimination.

As of June 2024, tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, and Hamas is still holding Israeli hostages. “Crisis on Campus” provides a window into how the divisions over the war continue to run deep on college campuses across the U.S.

“Crisis on Campus” is a FRONTLINE production with Retro Report. The director is James Jacoby and the producers are Scott Michels and Joseph Hogan. The writers are James Jacoby and Scott Michels. The senior producer is Dan Edge. The executive producer of Retro Report is Kyra Darnton. The editor-in-chief and executive producer of FRONTLINE is Raney Aronson-Rath.

  1. Millennials, Gen X and Gen Z, 3 absolutely worthless generations that have few, if any, redeemimg values. Look for very rough times ahead as they age and begin to take over. Very glad that I'm nearing the end of my life so I don't have to witness the collapse.

  2. The illegal sons of communist terrorist and muslim terrorist must be kicked out of west. These insects, illegal sons od hamas doesnt represent human rights or western values at all rather osama bin laden's values

  3. 6:17 I’ve watched this video once and agreed, but as I watch it again, she’s blaming only Israel, and doesn’t even mentioned Hamas, that’s like blaming the school for the actions of the school shooter.

  4. Palestine is not a place and never was. It is an ethnicity. People have a hard time understanding the difference between nationalities and ethnicities. Not all ethnic groups have their own country.

  5. When your kids grow up without hearing the word no they do stuf like threaten violence for doing anything except what they want
Dont let ure kids be thia dumb

  6. As of today August 2nd and as the world was watching the horrendous images from Gaza ,the time has proven the students they where right on condemning Israel and the west for committing this horrific genocide in Gaza ,as right now , even Canada , France and the UK are willing to vote and Palestine favor to become a Palestine state

  7. 37:45 I find this rather disgusting. A court of law will give lawyers and prevent systems of questioning like this. This hearing is blatantly played up for the cameras and public.

  8. 23:45 He makes a point and an overreach in one movement.
Point: A state may maintain its sovereign status and obligations to its citizens by military force.
Overreach: An implication that all actions by the Israeli state have been legal and defensive.

  9. They’re living under “oppression” because they’re a openly hostile population with an elected regime that wants to destroy Israel

  10. 30:53 Columbia’s version of MIT’s “From Congo to Sudan, no more peace on stolen land” is apparently “From Korea to Falastin, stop the US war machine” 🇰🇵🤡

  11. I’m pleasantly surprised that this was a good documentary, with some minor shortcomings. It should come with a blood pressure warning, though.

  12. Why is it black or white? Hamas terrorizing civilians was evil, but mass killing of Palestinians by Jewish state can't be justified either. Furthermore, on campus violence is not right. What should happen is for each group should choose representatives to discuss with impartial mediators to decide democratic way. Not easy but that's the civil way.

  13. Why would u make any kind of states existence based soley on the ethnicity and purpose of one particular set of people? Thats the real question, cause that inherently creates a hierarchy that seeks to put the interest of one ethnicity in front of all other ethnicities if and when it comes down to it. This debate was over before it even begun, Why does Israel even exist today as an ethnostate that somehow has legitimate claims for existing while committing one of the worst genocides of the 21 century? Should get to the bottom of that before illegitimately claiming there are two sides, which is means only one today.

  14. i late tu the broadcast, but nonetheless. i not condone violence (ie and wat some call terrorism), but when its the only way tu fite back, its wat u get. is(not)real IZ the problem. sure jews been going TO PALESTINE since way back, but Britain created the emergence of Is(not)real in 1917 via George and Balfour (thx tu events during WWI), then Is(not)real was given statehood in 1948 via the united nations (united my ass, britain and usa mostly). simply put, wandering europeans are SQUATTING on ARAB lands. look at tll the neighboring counties, wat r they, they b arab, islamic, etc. europe been poking its noze in places all over the world and gladly some arabic countries fite back. wats unfortunate iz they all squabble with each other over trivial things (hu owns a mosque, an instult, stupid womens headgear, etc) and cant agree tu disagree and then go squash Is(not)real
