In this video we will be conducting an engine oil flush cleaning procedure./ We have a badly sludged chevy equinox engine that needed timing chains. After the chain repair we are going to use an highly invasive cleaning protocol to break down and remove harmful engine deposits!

Thanks Ray! Very informative and entertaining videos!
Based on what you presented I agree that it has made a positive impact. I am sure after a couple of 3K oil changes it will get better!
Rainman Ray's Auto Repairs and Snake Oil Sales!😜
🙃
Can this be used on a diesel
Throw a quart of ATF in there for a hundred milles before your oil change, will loosen up and quiet lifters….or finish off that problematic engine.
Have you done one on engines that people put 10w 30 in a 0w 20 engine?
I use bg 44K about three times a year in my gas tank for my Mercedes for the injectors
Should have done an oil change after the final one after running it for 10 minutes. You won’t get sample results from “cleaners” to compare to a ”base”. The cleaner flushes gunk out.
So do an oil change after that cleaner to get the 2nd base
Before flush the engine, you should mechanically clean the parts you can reach. These may include the crankcase, top cover, and cylinder head. Doing so will prevent the oil channels from clogging during cleaning.
Well, what about the tiny passages in the valves for the cam phasers? Plugged screens galore"
Tip 1 : use a funnel when pouring in oil
Tip 2 : use cheap conventional oil for engine flush
Why did u guys not clean that valve cover first time u had it off
I would of never reinstalled that
Just stumbled on to the channel from YouTube throwing it out while following Eric over at “I do cars” (He’s fine… really…)
It seems to me the whole process was inefficient and required really rose colored glasses to see much good effect in / after the process. It occurs to me the loosened crud may well (sans wiping or air blasting) continue to be dislodged and in a worst case find itself re-lodged some place we would not want it.
Paying what, even at reasonable rates, would be a prohibitive price in time and materials for so little does not seem like sound practical maintenance.
I, like others, would like to see the Valvoline R&P run thru the same engine a couple changes just to see what difference if any it would make. I realize the coordination would be really tough and the time duration would be lengthy, but the Valvoline treatment would, at the least, be something a individual could do in a normal context of ownership….
According to Oil Experts like the Oil Geek Guy, more RPM the better for avoiding friction and getting cleaned, Scotty Kilmer does it @3,500 RPM.
It needs another treatment a d try other brands like Wynn and others. You're in about the same situation as DIY Dave and his 2002 Corolla; but this Engine was so dirty, and casted onto the Internal surface of the Engine
Also you forgot the BG 44K a
Fuel Additive in the Fuel Tank
The next time that you are willing to repair a vehicle to perfection for free for YouTube purposes, please let me know and I will consider driving my 1996, Toyota T-100 with 286.5 K miles oil leaks, bad tires and bad muffler from Northern California to your location 🙂
To be fair if it's a bit gummed up, remove rocker cover and clean it with a mix of parrafin/petrol.
(rocker gear and cover). Rinse it, oil and filter change gets it done. What you achieved with this test is multiple flushes which does clean it out but leaves the caked on bits.
next step would be to send oil samples to speed diagnostix
Merci beaucoup.
Thank you for the findings and now I know it will work it will just be a time situation that over time it can be handled without the need to take the engine apart
You should put a fan in front of the radiator
just change the oil when the service is do, personally I think it was a waste of money, and I think all the loose junk now is going to cause issues with plugging oil filter and possibly the oil pump screen. This is something you will have to manage over time to make sure your free engine cleaning doesn't damage the engine.
Ray. Are you interested in trying the Triax S7 Friction Modifier and engine cleaner?
Snake oil works better cheers.
Well let's go off of facts first …I think that ER stuff you put in first will do absolutely nothing…would not waste money on that service …ok so we have a car with 137,000 miles …I will say I have seen much worse ..Will also say I dont think owner neglected this car that much …sure probably went over on a few changes ..but this engine is known to build up carbon and sludge .. at 137,000 miles I think this engine has def has some build up ,but I believe 80% is on normal weae and tear and 20% on neglect .. honestly running a engine for over an hour at high rpm with cleaner can do more harm then good …I be honest I would not want my 137k mile engine treated like that for over an hour, I would be quite upset if I saw this happening to my car .. no disrespect…and to be clear I dont think any damage was done to engine …but again would not be happy …I think cleaning by hand would be best result , nothing crazy..pretty much what you were doing ..maybe even some brake cleaner to valve cover , and just wipe rockers and in between with a rag . And do regular 3,000 mile changes for next 10,000 miles. Maybe a additive to keep in oil for 1 change be a option as well . ..will say tho ..if this was a engine with 75k miles …with this kind of build up …possibly I woukd do that 2 part service as yes it did remove so containments…but to do that kind of strain to a 140k mile engine . I would not do ..Great video tho . Appreciate it
Ray, if you want to be thorough about this engine cleaning evolution, then place the samples in actual "lab" recepticles, labeled appropriately, and then send them to an engine lab for proper scientific analysis. That way you KNOW what's really going on and can verify/invalidate the process.
I think there a good start for poor neglected engines
If I see a spider the whole house is being burnt down possibly the whole neighborhood
The left one looks a little bit thicker when you poured out the left one the baseline you could see it kind of poured a little bit like syrup and the right one kind of came out real watery
Wow I can't believe the oil look like that after 10 minutes of run time yeah people this is why it's important to do regular schedule maintenance do your oil changes on time because in the early days when vehicles were actually investments cuz that's why these manufacturers build vehicles with planned obsolescence so that the vehicle fails after about 2 years because most people don't do regular maintenance so they just lease a vehicle now and then when it starts giving them problems they trade it in but see I don't do that I like vehicles that last a long time that's why I buy older vehicles those older vehicles were made very good like the Toyota trucks that made in the '90s the Ford trucks that were made in the late '90s early 2000s I have a Ford Ranger that's a 2003 it's got $170,000 mi on it and I do a regular oil change every 3,000 mi because one I mean the engine is old but I've seen those engines with as much as 500,000 mi on them and that's because the person did a regular maintenance on it all the time flush fluids at 30,000 change timing chains at 90,000 that's why it's important to do this because the vehicle will last your lifetime if you do these things but if you don't do these things they will fail very early
I hope you fixed the intake gasket that has the clogged PCV orifice that's what blows out the front seal
I think 20 minutes of run time is way too little. You should use a Detergent Oil, and run it for the whole service interval… Prevent the sludge in the first place.
I watched this video when it came out, as a lube tech. I'm rewatching it as it came across my feed as a full service tech. I do not miss working on GM engines one bit. ESPECIALLY those stupid canister filter locations. Very satisfying to see the engine cleaner
The equinox I had was great until it wasn’t. One oil change the dipstick tip was orange. Burned oil like crazy. Eventually the exhaust left a black mark in the garage when I would let it warm up a bit. On the drive to getting a new vehicle, the tranny started clunking. 😅 Do not miss the equinox one bit.
Everything was well done Ray! 👏
1 thing you could've done in addition would've been to add 1 Qt of original MMO w/ the EPR & 4 qts of new oil.
Then come back in 1K miles.
Valvoline 5 30 Restore and Protect. Don’t think just do. That sh$t really works.
Been watching you for years. Enjoy the adventures. Wrenching in my garage on my fleet of shitboxes.
The faster the vehicle wears out the faster the dealership gets sell another one some of there service intervals are fairly exsteam auto trans fluid life time of vehicle 😂
Valvoline Clean Protect Engine oil …very very good stuff ..
iv presure wash that valve cover
Why not just wipe it down and finish it easily rather than doing it again and again? It would save lots of time doing it that way
REeeeeeeeeeeeEeeeeeeeeee
so, more frequent should clean up the engine.
Me too
Could you take a brake cleaner and clean off that cover and get some of the build up out of the engine faster that just letting it run through the process?
Ray, Valvoline has a new oil called restore and protect. They claim that after four oil changes with their new oil that it will clean out 100% of the dirt and deposits in your motor. That’s a pretty bold statement.
That looks like a expensive project
and this is why, even with newer advanced oils that claim longer intervals between oil changes- i ALWAYS change oil every 3000 miles. oil is so incredibly cheap in the grand scheme of things for your engine, just change it and keep your engine clean
How does the cleaner go with wet belts
That, "you have to manage your expectations" sounds more like, "you expect to pay, but, don't expect any real results"
I find the best use case for the BG Dynamic Engine Clean Service is after a headgasket failure where the coolant has intruded into the oil…it works great to clean the cappuccino colored sludge out. As for the use case you used it for I agree with your assessment that it is to clean the important internal and coupled with the Intake/valve steam cleaner treatment for DI vehicles it will greatly increase the engines overall operation…and our shop does use mainly BG products because of how great they work…especially the DI Valve stem cleaner…
How about changing your oil every 3 months 3000 miles which ever comes first?. Oil is cheap engine repairs are not.
