This video discusses the new new recall regarding the L87 6.2 b8 engine that suffers a catastrophic loss of propulsion while driving. The current situation has us on the 3rd recall update. Now, GM has decided that using a thicker oil is not a good idea, and they all affected engines will be replaced under dealer/manufacture warranty.

Text message from Garage Monkey Mechanics
"Now we have to picoscope all used inventory thats on stop sale for which they released a different email basically saying 0w-40 and all the other stuff is on intergalactic backorder for the L87 and services can't be completed. But we need to be using a harness they are shipping to us."
reminds me of ignition key event.. many loyal gm ers got messed over.
My 2022 Sierra 6.2l passed the so-called inspection and got the new oil, etc. but I lost confidence in GM. And it really didn't matter if they extended the warranty. That my engine could blow towing our RV in the mountains was something I just couldn't let slide. So, I traded the Sierra and bought an F250 diesel. I realize these trucks are night and day but I'm quite happy with my decision.
As soon as I saw the other guys video of that tear down, I thought that crank wasn’t polished…. Yep, root cause. I’m a jet mechanic and even I could tell…. BTW, you would have to pay me even more (I make $65hr) to work on cars. No thanks, I’ll pay you…
So it appears the crank seems to have caused the damage to the bearings and in turn to the connecting rods.
did gm ever resolve 8L90 transmission failures?
Is it possible I can seek legal action for the dealership that sold me my 2023 Cadillac Escalade knowing that it had a active recall. I wish I would’ve saw this video months ago because I wouldn’t have purchased this vehicle because now it’s in the shop waiting on a new engine and like you said in your video, they may not even have any in stock and I still have to make monthly payments on the vehicle that I’m not even driving.
Great content Love your channel butttttt, WOW..!, I hope your tech doesn’t take my car on a road test??
Don’t buy L87 6.2L 2021-2024… Check.
I smell a possible class action….
Love your videos Ray ! Its crazy , because i had just seen that video you had posted about Eric and the tear down of that { 6.2 Engine Blows up } rather what GM calls { Loss of Propulsion } The engine Eric was tearing down , had under 50 k miles on it , and it should never be so difficult to turn the crank over at all , even with 2 Less pistons ! that Blew ! wow , Like it has the wrong size bearings in it , which is the DEFECT ! and that dark orange color definitely is a sign of Low oil pressure causing over heating and high friction ! What makes it even worse , Idiot Engineers from , GMC CHEVY CADILLAC are still using the AFM/DFM which that in turn will blow up your engine as well , geez , if its not 1 thing its another ! They also installed this junk on the Corvette ! a Sports Car ! can you believe that ! We know that it is not going to give good gas mileage , why install it in that ! is beyond me ! I think its time they took care of their Customer base , Last i heard , there is a class action Law suit on them !
Still waiting to hear about the 5.3L engine 🥶😬
You are so spot on, Ray. GM, Ford, and Stellantis are totally obsessed with short term gain. What Boggles the mind is that consumers keep spending $ they do not have to encourage this piracy. Guess you can't fix stupid, after all.
I don't think the 0W-40 recall was ever intended to be anything other than a stopgap measure while a more thorough one (which was total engine replacement) was readied.
That said, if, for the sake of argument, if an engine that was checked for P0016 and found to be good and later develops a program, the engine replacement recall still applies, right? I would imagine so.
10:35 I do not believe that was the EPA's doing. These engines were designed for 0W-20 from the get-go.
Of course my 2001 gmc 1500 5.3l is BULLETPROOF since day 1
2021 Silverado 5.3l 39000 miles , driving June 1st on Florida I 75 in morning rush hour traffic . SURPRISE , truck TOTALLY DIES ,absolutely no warning , all super bad in a split second, FUEL PUMP CONTROL MODULE FAILURE , dealer says quite common , what a bunch of pre planned obsolescence, almost crashed , wish I never bought this Late Model Garbage
If you have one and its still running, go key off a few times to FEEL how hard it will be to stop, turn ext with no power. It can be done but most women will crash. Ive known 2 women to crash just because they lost the power steering pump on an engine stall. Teach the women men, go key off in controlled place with them.
So did I hear you right ? A dealer can't sell you one with an open recall ? I'm looking at an at4 right now on car max that says open recall l87 motor
if you added a cold air intake during the warranty. Would that void the engine recall warranty or am I still safe in the event? I lose total engine control or propulsion as they say?
Maybe the line boar It's not the spec other words twisted
Government screwing us over everyday of the week.
What exactly is the defect? Is it the quality of the metal used in the crank or rods? Or is the way they were machined, or something else?
Few things:
oil heavier than 0w-20 is specified in some parts of world that are hotter. Within the united states its mostly no longer possible to recommend alternate oil weights, but the recommendation to change oil more frequently if it has been under heavy is meant to partially compensate for that. (I suspect decent fleet managers in the hot parts of the southwest are still speccing their oil up in weight)
Mechanic complains about "eRr Ma GeRd 0w-20" were debunked in the 90s by toyota and honda when oil wasn't as good and engine component metallurgy was WAY not as good.
Oil weight isn't just fuel economy, its also power.
CAFE is not about tax breaks, it is about fines. Every tenth of a mile of a gallon below the standard had been a fine ranging from 5 dollars to 17 dollars per tenth of gallon for ALL vehicles sold by the manufacturer. Fuel economy standards are based on the wheel base which is why trucks and SUVs keep getting bigger and heavier and the average fuel economy has gone from 14 mpg in 1975 to 26 mpg now – you kind of mentioned that part.
The L87 failures have nothing to do with the oil, but out of spec manufacturing of cranks from a factory in mexico and rods from a factory in the US. (detroit I think)
6.6 Liters is 402 CI. They already have tunes for a 402 LS from their performance division. the 6.6 gas was specifically developed to deliver similar power as the L86 but at lower compression and milder tune to provide a flatter and longer power curve than the really hot tune in the L86. I cannot even begin to imagine how dumb even a novice would have to be to confuse a gas and diesel engine.
I am on my third engine and head for fourth engine 35,000 miles. Third engine has metal in oil and this is after 2024 183 serial number.
If not long hauling, buy a Cybertruck
If you're thinking GM is the only one that is taking a big shit on the consumers you are wrong it is the big three auto manufacturers doing the same Shady underhanded backstabbing design bullcrap. buy old school and build it tough get away from the big three shit boxes you work too long and hard for your money to be spending it on trash
The LS family was much better. The DOD was bad enough and then cafe along with the oil for fuel mileage tells a def story. Thanks for that
I looked at the 2500s and bought a 19 6.0 gas 6A & yes I lose a little fuel mileage but none of the issues the 1500s have & that 6.0 has been around a while. They upgraded the intake and gave it VVT. Nothing that causes major issues from my findings. Had it 6 mons and I’m happy about my decision. So far so good.
Perhaps you can shed Some info on why GM are using 0W-40 oil when the owners manual has 5W-30 oil nominated.
I am shocked at the shit they put out since the engine machining equipment today are at least 10 times better and accurate than in the 60s, how and why is that happening . Technicians wearing too tight yoga pants can't think?
GM will soon state put in 90 weight Gear lube in the engine to keep the GM engine running until you pull out your drive way.
Question Ray. I just bought a new Toyota Sienna hybrid 30:57 van that uses 0-16W oil. Isn't that oil too thin? That's the oil Toyota recommends. So I'm I slowly destroying my engine? Just listen to you talk about GM 6.2
reminds me of ignition problems from old gm they .disrespected loyal customers
More GM junk. They never admit to their engineering failures. They want to blame everything but themselves.
Ejecting crankshaft pieces through the block.
Oh, that's what SpaceX calls a "RUD." Rapid unexplained disassembly.
CO2 vilification is a globalist TAX SCAM!!!
I'm British but I agree with your analasys. Your a smsrt man Ray.
I just bought a 2021 escalade sport. I knew about the recall. ours has already had the engine replaced by a dealer on 2/5/25. I was torn about this but it has only 4000 miles on the new engine. hopefully its had the problem solved. The replacement engines are all rebuilt is my understanding which is probably a good thing vs mass produced on a problematic line. I guess I am a sucker for an escalade and gluten for punishment haha
