The Farmall MD broke down again, and it’s a mess inside the valve cover.

  1. I really get a kick out of it when Pete plays "Ride of the Valkyries"! And Hillarie always supports the fresh startup too. Great job~~Jeff from CT

  2. Did you notice any head cracking or injector pump damage while cleaning? Those seem to be pretty common failure points on these tractors.

  3. steel hardens with age. Springs are made from 01 steel which when hardened draws at 900 deg. fah. to make spring steel redraw all your springs at 900Deg. fah. buying old springs in age hardened state may still break. you need a heat treatment furnace that can be set accurately at 900 deg. fah and temper 10 minutes per inch of thickness after reaching given through temperature. . you can buy temperature crayons for checking steel temperature used by welders. Some times I Had to make springs using 01 steel. I worked as a toolmaker for most of my life and have my own toolroom behind my house now for 34 years . I am now 80.

  4. Youre one of the smart farmers that didn't fall victim to Deere and the technology issues you see so much today. All of your equipment is handily maintained by you. Also like the fact that you spread workload around your equipment.

  5. Having dropped a keeper once I can attest to how much damage that can do to an engine! Valve broke the piston and that broke a hole in the block, etc! Pretty expensive repairs!

  6. Too much maintenance for me, that's probably why the MD didn't last a long time but for a collector/enthusiast it's a labor of love. Much of the knowledge about how to maintain these have been lost over the years. (Except for the tractors still in use)

  7. It would be nice for you to find a MTA with dual exhaust yes dual exhaust came that way from the factory our neighbor had one I've only seen one in my lifetime but I know it exists if you were to come to Iowa I could show it to you probably

  8. Holding the old ones next to the new ones qyou can definitely see the difference in quality. Old ones seem to have larger diameter material making up the spring compared to the new ones. Hopefully they werent heavily stressed and work out for you!

  9. I just discovered your channel. I enjoy the content , especially the MD. I went through the videos of the restoration and enjoyed them very much. IH s diesel engine of that era is very unique to say the least.

  10. Ugh- new stuff and quality. I would put a very big magnet on the bottom of the oil pan near the drain hole. Hopefully, it falls all the way through without going for a roller coaster rid on a cam lobe. When you change the oil next time, you may be able to look inside the pan with a bore scope, and if it is there, remove the pan magnet and fish it out. A big magnet on the oil pan of anything will catch a lot of particulates in a machine.

  11. Unfortunately the trip back was pretty rough.. after we left our friends my Dad took a spill at the first rest Stop we stopped at and we got as far as South Bend Indiana and my Dad got quite ill.. the ER in South Bend got him well enough that we could get gone the following day which we did.. My Dad was still in tough shape so the following day we took him to the VA hospital in Syracuse where he gets services.. It turns out that my Dad had a mild stroke, mild heart failure, fluid in his lungs and Pneumonia .. please pray for him as he recovers.. Thank you..
