In Episode 6 of Windows Games on Linux, I am going over configuring Fallout 3 using Steam Proton. This guide doesn’t go over GOG or Disc installs, but only those that own it through Steam.
GOG or Disc Installs refer to https://lutris.net/games/fallout-3-game-of-the-year-edition/
Download XLive.dll
Official Source: http://download.gfwl.xboxlive.com/content/gfwl-public/redists/production/xliveredist.msi
Extracted xlive.dll from me: https://www.christitus.com/tools/xlive.zip
Put the XLive.dll in
$STEAM_DIR/SteamApps/compatdata/22370/pfx/drive_c/windows/SysWOW64/
Recommended Fallout 3 Launcher Settings
HDR/Bloom = OFF
If you have flickering or texture popping
Turn off Anti-aliasing
Recommended Custom Launcher Options
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 DO=(%command%); “${DO[@]/%FalloutLauncher.exe/Fallout3.exe}”
Other Notes:
Alt+F4 to kill game as it doesn’t cleanly exit for me

The game only runs on Linux mint on my old laptop core i7 8GB RAM 920M with one older proton version, same for Oblivion. I've put both on medium settings 1080p, turned off the grass from Oblivion and it runs fine (60fps).
(I'm curious why you would want to use Steam to play games in Linux. I'm all about getting games running in Linux, though I wouldn't want to use Steam, not actually. Like, wasn't that part of the problem with Fallout 3 to start with, is that they wanted people to use a 3rd party service to play the game? I think it's cool that you got it working though. It seems that people even have difficulty getting Steam purchases to work.)
No stutter/lag?
Im gonna try to do this so i can play it on steam deck^^
I can't get it to work in Windows.
is this only steam?
I've tried two separate xlive.dll files with neither running properly once I click New in the in game menu. trying to run on the latest version of Ubuntu. tried with playonlinux but no avail. any solutions?
they fixed the windows live issue, they removed it!
I never thought to get this tutorial from this channel lol
How often does it crash?
I do not know english. It's so difficult for me 🙁
And now it is not working for the advanced launch.
if you dont find the compat data carpet you need to open fallout 3 and let him upgrade
quick question, I know this was from a year ago, but I went through the guide and found that the game worked until I clicked "New" on the fallout 3 GOTY menu, this might be just fallout 3 GOTY's shenanigans but I want to know anyone found a fix for that? also I have looked at the protondb page for this, I tryed fixing the Xlive.dll problem, got it to work, and then after getting it working (on proton 3.16-9), I tryed to play but as the slide was scrolling the game stopped and crashed.
EDIT: I also noticed that it talked of windows features and their needing to be turned on or off, also I am on linux manjaro
Do mods work in Wine? I would need the Intel Bypass mod to be able to run it, i have the GOG version of the game
Extracting that into a wine blanck bottle…. What does that mean?
I have been trying for a day, but every time it launches it works but when I do new game it crashes.
I recently moved over from Windows 10 to Manjaro Linux for the first time and I got to say I am in love with this OS it is so awesome. And one of the first things that really surprised me was just how well Fallout 3 works on Linux, I have been playing it for over a week now and not once have I had it crash on me!
Xlive.dll is missing from your page btw
mine still doesnt even get to the launcher 🙁
Is this moddable?
22370 folder doesn't exist.
Thanks for this video! I just bought this game on Humble Bundle on sale. I didn't dig through any .ini files, but I got it working at least. When I was on Windows last time for gaming (during 2014, I think) that game, even with the .ini fixes, worked and bugged out every fifteen or so minutes. Need to be playing more of this so I know that won't happen 🙂
already wrote to you on your redit but no reply, so i'll ask here, did you manage to mod Fallout 3 on linux? and if so, could you make a tutorial on how to?
My The Game that is keeping me from switching my main pc to Linux is RuneScape. Have been playing it since preschool and it's a second home to me. It's an mmorpg, not on Steam and so forth so I kinda doubt it'd work. There is some stuff about the old java client working on Linux but most stuff I find about it are from 2012. :/
If the new client did work however, I'd switch in an instant. (literally)
Get World of Warcraft working
You sir…are my new Linux King.
how to test if any gamebryo game is stable in a few short steps. open console with the ½/§ key "player.setav speedmult 1500". "tcl" "tgm" close console, crouch, stand up, and fly in any direction. Wait for the crash. If no crash comes in a couple of minutes, it's stable.
steam version is the worse version, don't think you can mod FO on linux very much which kinda defeats the purpose of playing those old games anywho. vanilla bugthesda games were never really playable in their original form without the modding community's fixes.
How about the original The Witcher?
I've always wanted to get final fantasy XI and XIV working on Linux. I had hit and miss attempts with XIV where install went smoothly but when launching the game, I'd get a blank screen. XI has been a major pain, lutris only does a partial install with only the main game files are installed. The remaining add-ons have be manually installed to complete the install. This is where I fubar the install. Skyrim ran perfectly for me via Steam play. Fallout 4 worked but audio was MIA which I never got around to finding a fix for. I put a 1700X in a Dr. Zabar's Sentry case and installed Antergos on that. My main PC is stuck on Windows 10 for the time being.
the crash on exit bug was faithfully reimplemented in wine from how the game behaves in windows…
