In this video, I go over Gaming on Linux and its FPS benchmarks. They are starting to beat Windows in some games, and changes happening in Linux that will push FPS EVEN HIGHER in Linux!

Tell me the day when Native AAA games run on linux
Couple things… Windows, is reliable. The notion that it's unstable is no more accurate today, than when Windows users claim that you have to run Linux from a command line. Just not true. I have run Windows since 3.11 through 11, and its table as a rock. I go months between reboots, and that's only when a particular update requires it. My system runs 24/7/365 and it's been years since I had a BSOD or lockup. Additionally, I have downloaded literal petabytes of data over the years and never gotten hit with a virus or malware. Windows works very well for everything that I need.
That said, I have dabbled and played with Linux since the Suse 2.0 and Mandrake days… Ran it on laptops and non gaming platforms, and I do enjoy it a lot. Heck, I am running GIMP and OpenShot video editor on my gaming box… But when it comes to playing the latest games, and playing them properly at 4k and high frame rates with all the graphics eye candy supported, it's just not there yet.
When it is, I will gladly make the switch. No reason not to, at that point. I have a windows Laptop for work, my personal laptop is a MacBook Air M2, I prefer Android for my phone, and Linux would slot in well with that… But, I need to run all my games, including upcoming titles that I will want. I have an ATI R7900 XT at the moment, but what if I want to go back to Nvidia?
It's almost there, for a guy like me. Hopefully it will be soon… I don't want to fiddle, I just want to turn it on, install my game and go…
Starting to? I could run World of Warcraft in 2006 on Linux using wine with way better FPS and stability. The drawback has always been ease of use for setting things up (Steam had made huge strides there) and peripheral support. I use a G13 controller, and as of the last time I checked the support just wasn't there. (at least not easily done)
Linux gaming has made huge strides in recent years. I am convinced it is the future of gaming.
You're funny, but for an Nvidia user like me, sacrificing fps is not on Windows, but on Linux will have to sacrifice fps, if Windows is the operating system as bad as you say when it runs on AMD, then Linux is the bad operating system when running on Nvidia, I wasn't fooled into trading performance on Windows for Linux.
What you say is true, Chris! There has been writing on the wall for a long time now – around the mid 'noughties I was working on aircraft design using Laminar Research's "X-Plane" sim, and X-Plane boss Austin Meyer announced that he was putting out a version re-compiled for Linux, which was intended to run faster…
Our box was getting old, and did not support a good frame rate under Win XP for the latest X-Plane release, so we loaded up SuSE Linux and tried it.
So new that we had to re-name a couple of libraries, but it worked, and was "about" 30% faster frame rate than under XP, which meant we did not have to buy a new PC that year! Woohoo!
Native Linux game + Vulkan + amd gpu + lighweight distro = punching windows in performance
i mean i got 60 to 57 fps on guild wars 2 on manjaro im getting straight up 107 fps i mean damn
sudo apt remove sudo
I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 but windows 10 sucked in my opinion and I couldn't go back to Windows 7 so now I'm gonna upgrade to linux
on windows when i play minecraft iget 2fps!!!! but on linux i get 70fps!!!!! ilove linux its way better than windows for me (im using arch linux manjaro xfce)
And now here we are a year later. We have Ubuntu Gaming Pack OS That does everything. We have AMD Ryzen 3 and 6800 XT on a 570 Chipset. Whats not to like?
I'm still getting to frames per second in Linux lol
What about emulator games like gran turismo , need4speed and other like that games on Linux ?
No, it is not surprising.
This is interesting. I for one would love to see a video on best distros for gaming and why they are better or worse. Keep up the good work, you are my go to right now for linux related content. 🙂
i nee help for my world of warcraft low fps its bad could u help me with that
ACO not AOC! AOC is a zero IQ bartending communist liberal politician.
Well this is true unless you have Plasma KDE with a glass theme and a desktop of widgets 😂
My thought is sudo apt remove Windows. Lolz. Sudo stays.
Not everyone like to use coding.
Or are you so blinded that ypu forgot about it?
what i have a intel hd graphics card and th pc is low end but enough for csgo
Mhhh… well i guess i just gonna keep sacrifice some of my fps so i can play some of my favorite games wich is impossible even just to start up on linux.
Ill say it again, solve the Anti cheat issue when it comes to linux & you will solve a huge issue with gaming on linux, arma, battle royales, i know csgo is native on linux but most serious players in the cs community use third party clients for competitve play such as esea which requires their anti cheat, so many top end games held back from the potential explosion on linux due to the anti cheats, and tbh im not sure this will ever change
Does that mean steam machine will make a comeback? Anyway steam os doesn't seem to work with my TR. Using Mx-Linux (primary) and Centos.
after this… linux also need anti virus
Is good to see eminem on youtube talking about linux.
Yes I know this video is old. Yes proton and vulkan api is helping. But still NOT there. Until hardware vendors actually support there hardware with proper Linux drives. Example. Almost ALL motherboards made in last 10+15+ year use RealTek sound chipset or codec.
Just built Ryzen 2700x with MSI pro Carbon x470 Mobo and every LINUX distro I’ve tired. Pop os included. On-board sound does not work.
– NO AMD official drivers
– NO official Nvidia drivers ( GTX 1080Ti)
– NO RealTek audio drives. / no RealTek control panel ?
– There NO MSI afterburner. Linux version.
– There NO Logitech g29 force feed back drivers for steering wheel for any games.
We NEED hardware venders to support Linux with drivers. We need DEVS support Linux. It’s still not there,
As ex beta tester/server admin/ ex moderator (tech help guy) from small steam indie dev team before step down due health issue/was moving at the time.
Want support Linux but it still not there because hardware venders don’t official support it or offer drivers/game dev mostly ignore it cus not enough ppl using it. Vavle can’t even bother put %100 effort into It or hire devs to build better os.
-R7 2700x / x470 Mobo / 16 GB ddr4 3200mhz / GTX 1080TI / 1 TB SSD / 2x 240 ssd / win 7 64 bit / Linux
If Linux overtakes windows in all titles I play: Blizzard games, guild wars 2 mainly I'll change to Linux main with Windows vm until ms office stuff works flawlessly.
Hopefully titles are all developed with Linux in mind too.
Finally 90% is way optimistic I'd say 50% at best
AOC OR ACO ^^? what is it now?
So will there be a Vulkan and ACO compiler for Windows?
I would like to play with better graphics settings, if on Linux we'll have better performance. It's maybe will be possible with sacrifice additional frames lost on windows 😉
Which Linux distro do you recommend for gaming.
Hey Chris, this is a great video. Finally somebody says the truth about it… And I laughed a couple of times, especially when you said something like -I am using Windows because I am used to it, not because its better.
I Think Valve and AMD are pushing this as they are the main gaming support and sellers. I Think Windows used to be a good game operating system but this is changing now I've using linux for 3 years in home and windows to do some tasks that i cannot in linux because of my company vpn. But I Think Linux is a great system and is free and we have all the community support that are making a very good job.
Just yesterday I tried Hitman – the native Linux version – and it is SO MUCH BETTER! Not only the graphics are SPECTACULAR, but I also feel a much more direct connection to the game, to the character and the in-game environment. There is a sense of CLARITY, SIMPLICITY, and CONTROL! Windows is a heap of bloatware that has become repulsive beyond my level to tolerate it.
I just recently switched to Linux and I felt a great sense of RELIEF and freedom in general along with a renewed motivation and excitement of working on my projects – which became a "drag" because I was becoming increasingly repulsed by Windows. But I'm now seeing just how using Linux translates into a much more immersed and "unobstructed" gaming experience, and it's AMAZING! Linux is the future for gaming! I like seriously NOTICE MORE THINGS in the game and I actually like the game itself much better.
Evidently, and obviously, that sense of repulsion, obstruction and interference – the "Windows experience" – was carrying over into the gaming experience and really anything else that I was trying to do using Windows. Once that was eliminated, I can actually FOCUS much better and much more directly on what I am working on, on MY purpose and use of the computer – hence, improved attention to detail in the game, and other performance improvements in working with other applications.
