There is an old sayin’, “Some times you get the bear and sometimes the bear get’s you.” In the case ogf this van the bear got the owner. He and a friend attempted to DIY their head gaskets on this 2004 Honda Odyssey and unfortunately the crank gear has two marks on. Some of you know where I am going with this…. -Enjoy!

I can't believe that, somebody did the head gascket by himself but he didn't know about timing the engine correctly, and he just put the timing belt back withought timing the engine correctly. I am pretty sure he didn't remove and instal head bolts the correct sequence and also he may not did the correct torque for the head bolts, and also hedidnt adjust the valves correctly as you said.
You have to know what you doing before even start fixing the car yourself and that easy just find a YouTube video about your car and the problem you are fixing and learn from it everything and understand it before starting on your own car. Well. If you are a biggener or new on fixing car yourself, you need to stay away from certain critical repair like head gascket, timing belt, valves adjustment.. till you have anought knowledge about cars and also have enough experience like at least a year or more in.fiximg your car.
Can't believe you took the front apart w/ the PS in your way…Pity……Line clamp @ 5" from the PS inlet line at the res..Remove the inlet line from the res. by tilting the nipple up and slipping a 3/8 line plug onto it…wipe up a few drops….REMOVE the pump (1 8 mm bolt and nut) TOSS the WHOLE thing over the back Valve Cover. Now, your 1/2 hour faster on a T-Belt/ H2o Pump service AND you have skin on your forearms! Abandon the testosterone…..42 yrs of just Honda Service says so!
0:18 the moment I heard head gaskets , I think loose ground, let’s see
I ran a shop for many years. I turned away DIY'ers that mangled their own cars. I turned them away because all they did was ask questions and complain about how much everything cost. I spent so much time with these nickel and dimers that it wasn't profitable. I had to save all the old parts and many of them brought their own parts to me for installation. Most of the parts they brought were the absolute cheapest parts that could be had or they were pulled from a salvage yard. One guy brought me a used oil filter. Many didn't or couldn't pay when the job was done.
Triangle is dedicated TDC pointer for cam/crank sync during belt job.
Round mark is for base distributor ignition timing verification with a timing light.
My 1966 SS396 Chevelle was much simpler.
You have to be crazy. I'm not putting what oil I think is going to work. I'll let the dealer be responsible for that.
Interesting! Good show.
my mechanic told me once that a lot of people who try to perform "do it yourself" vehicle repairs just cause themselves a bigger mechanical problem than the one they started off with
DIY in this case stands for destroy it youeself
It is sad that you cannot mention the other shops name so other people dont get burn by them !!
I would do a leak down test on the back cylinders first on the back head I still wouldn't waste my time on a cylinder test leak down test really I would just tell the customer both has got to be pulled because of the inferior job that the other guy did I wouldn't trust anything that the other guy did I personally would tell the customer I have to pull both heads or I wouldn't do the job
If all that stuff was loose then the head job was not a successful head job we know it was not a successful head job because he got the timing off that's included in the job but if it was me I would go ahead and pull them heads and cuz he got some bad valves anyway they're they're not going to hit and not be damaged but you might be able to save the heads but you know damn good well you're going to have to pull them heads and make sure it's done right this time
That back when it looks like it's off one tooth
I used to watch your channel all the time. I jumped on this video while and remembered why I no longer watch your videos. The amount of advertising that cuts in and interrupts the video is SICKENING. I do not know if you can control the amount of advertising or not, but there is a balance point and you're beyond that balance point. There is no enjoyment in watching you diagnosis something only to have today's sensational advertising come in and totally disrupt the video.
Great video, thanks for sharing.
don't memorize something that you can look up. I had a complete idiot of a college professor who didn't understand that.
Oh yeah, you can hear the timing is out.
Rewatching this years later cuz I forgot how the story ends
No Eric you are wrong where did you put the transducer that is what it sees as cylinder no 1 but on the opposite one
All the gear, but frankly no idea. Use a trusted mechanic folks.
As in, they cut their own gasket from material?
Any time someone has problems after they’ve done their own engine work, I always assume it’s a timing issue. Case in point in this video. Sometimes you can have one part lined up and then another part is off. If you’re doing your own timing, it’s not a bad idea to do extensive research for timing your own engine, buying tools that dealerships might have on hand for timing your make’s vehicle, etc. It’s an expensive mistake to make that requires utmost attention to detail compared to other works in repairing a vehicle.
Thank you for the clear splendid demonstration with the pico scope to find the compression failure 😊
Let's see. There is a dot and a triangle for candidates for the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket. I think I'll choose the dot. I got a 50% chance of being right.
Running it with a bent valve may do damage to the valve seat. Also use a boroscope to see if there is any holes in pistons. Gotta love those interference engines.
ur just hoping that valve will flatten out again…/wink
