Remember how awesome Synergy was before it was commercialized? Well, fear not, someone has forked the original Synergy code and has been updating it with Barrier! It removes the barrier between your PCs with Free and Open Software of course!

  1. Ok, after reading the comments… I need to CLARIFY what Barrier / Synergy is!
If you have Multiple Computer WITH Dedicated Monitors AND you want to use one keyboard/mouse for a UNIFIED desktop.
This is not a KVM replacement, VNC, or Remote software.

  2. I tried connecting a Windows machine to a GNOME desktop, but the mouse cursor disappears as soon as I move it from the Linux machine. Interestingly, this issue doesn't occur when using XFCE.

  3. Some programs block the click and the keyboard press from a shared computer, how they know that the input is not coming from a physical device? Is there a way to bypass this?

  4. I found Mouse Without Borders is much better and not as complected to set up. I had Sharemouse for a couple years and it was constantly giving problems.
It's 100% free with more features and never gives any troubles like Sharemouse.

  5. Thanks for this video. It allowed me to finally break my dependence on Mac OS as my daily driver. Now I just slide over to the mac for the few holdout things that I can't get working on Linux.

  6. hi… i just started using barrier… i configured it fine on two linux mint PCs… the problem is, i always have my firewall (gufw/ufw) turned on for both systems… and barrier only works if my firewall is off… is there a way to allow barrier through the firewall without turning it off… thanks…

  7. Chris, is it possible to set up Barrier with the following configuration: Desktop – Dual boot Win 10 and Ubuntu 20.04 (either one can be the Server) Raspberry Pi 4B 8GB running Ubuntu 20.04 and 1 Samsung 32" monitor with 1 HDMI port, but using a GANA 3 port switch to swap HDMI cables??? I have tried both computer as the server but the client always says "Starting".

  8. Still looking for a Barrier like App for an IPad from a PC KM. "Acros Center" is a good solution but it cost too much annually to warrant a replacement using a traditional KVM switch.

  9. Didn't work for me and I don't see you demonstrating it in action. I have a Windows Laptop that I want to create a sd flavor on my Raspberry Pi … so I have those 2 systems connected to my network and the mouse cursor won't cross from one screen to the next. And that would have been so easy.

  10. Is there an alternative where I don’t have to run setup and I can do it by just running exe ?

Also do you think that the actual kvm Hardware can work without installing any software?

  11. Question: I actually have a SynergyPro licence Key (Covid health care to use at work)… Aside from the "not open source" : which is better? Barrier or Synergy (smoothness, speed, less memory hog, ease of use, etc.) thanks! I need to install today :-/

  12. The answer is probably "no", but is this also how you record the bios-screens when you change settings in there? Or do you have dedicated KVM devices that grab the video from VGA or HDMI? Curious, because I'm still looking for a cheap solution to get my custom -box in the attic runnning VMWare ESXI to interact with it's screen and keyboard over network while it boots up. I understand Barrier is not compatible with that but maybe you have other suggestions.

  13. In cases where I have multiple desktop PCs or servers I have always used KVMs however there are times where I wanted to slap a laptop next to a multi display desktop or workstation and mouse over between the two systems.
