For decades we’ve heard about America’s “dropout crisis.†Meet Dr. Victor Rios, a high school “dropout†turned author and professor, who designs programs to support students who’ve been pushed out of school. To solve our crisis in education, Rios argues, is to shift our understanding of the problem.
“The Pushouts†filmmakers follow Rios and his team of mentors as they work to build an innovative learning environment for young people fighting to succeed despite overwhelming systemic barriers.
“It’s not just about these kids redeeming themselves. It’s also about us redeeming ourselves – turning around the system that has really set up a lot of these young people to fail,†says Rios.
FRONTLINE first met Rios while filming the 1994 classic film, “School Colors†— when he was a struggling student at Berkeley High School. Despite Rios himself being “pushed out†of school, over the past 25 years he’s become a best-selling author and expert on the school-to-prison pipeline.
Now, “The Pushouts†explores how his journey is helping the next generation negotiate a system that seems designed to push them out. Starts 12/20/2019 on PBS.

I grew up in Watts and my rough upringing is the fuel to my success grew up in the Jordan Downs
Those project are in East Los Angeles. I lived there 1975-1980, it was so bad that once my dad graduated from UCLA ( through a government program) he pulled us out of there. I’m in shock to known about the pipeline now that I’m getting my degree in Education. 😢 I escaped from the system.
I am an assistant director of dining at a college, I tell these kids education is the most important thing you can do, especially as a POC. I care about all the kids getting an education but the black males more so. At 55 I see what the world has to offer and what it has become. The fact that they talk about felonies will hold you back, but if you are part of the 1% and white nope , Being mediocre not knowing anything about the job is okay all you are obedient and white or white passing. Kash Patel well is the only person of color in the current Admin. If nothing else this should teach you the importance of an education. Morals are a separate issue. I read the pipeline starts in third grade looking at standardized test scores especially reading and writing . That is when and how they figure out how many jail cells will potentially be needed. that's crazy. That is the reason I sent my kid to private School, I hired tutors over the summer, he was not going to be uneducated and trapped in a crazy system. Black women understand the importance of education, men need to get on board more.
Sociology teaches victimhood and blame.
I was a 4.0 student majoring in Sociology and not a single professor in 2 years/7 classes was open to discuss decisions/responsibility.. I read M. Alexander The New Jim Crow and was admonished for just slightly challenging some of her arguments.
Good people doing good thingsâ¤â¤
Such a heartbreaking upbringing,im glad youre doing better now brotherâ¤
Close the borders to stop importing poverty and low-IQ members of society, and stop having kids you cannot afford. It was not like this 50 years ago. It just wasn't.
😪
The School-to-Prison Pipeline is slavery reborn.
Victor, you are amazing, we need more leaders like you.
Dads…Dads…Dads…Dads. Be a good father to your children, especially boys, who just need to learn that discipline and self-respect. It isn't poverty, people have been poor forever, it isn't systemic racism, take the father out of the family in ANY culture and see what you get. A strong family, is the first line in stopping children on the path to prison.
Brown people need to stop seeing themselves brown!!
Begin to see people as human beings…
We're all just people. All that Chicano power/ brown pride and spanglish is all bullshit!!!
Victoria at 5:51 is spot on with the expectations of some "outsiders"some of those outsiders are teachers and other decision makers.
I was teaching inner-city Tucson, AZ
The majority of my HS students were never out of their neighborhood at age 14 , let that sink in…
How do I know: When we went for a sports event to a border town our road trip felt like their first vacation ever ! ! !
Much respect

Schools are trash. And the union bureaucrats profit all the while. The money faucet is only a protest away. Trash teachers unions.
Truly inspiring!
I just watched a Vice Documentary about Liberia and what other human beings have to do to survive and make it to the next day. Then switch over to this …to hear some drop outs complaining about all the “struggles in their lives†…
“Push out†vs drop out … blame the system, never hold the individual responsible … oh liberals, when will you learn. This is exactly the upside down thinking that pushed people to move away from the Democratic Party and vote for an idiot.

This is how we got the Parkland Florida High School shooter who killed 17 people at Stoneman Douglas. Authorities were repeatedly held back because of this [School to Prison Pipeline]
If you had three felonies for stealing cars then that was not your specialty.
The children of “illegal aliens†struggle, and it’s the American people’s fault? Yeah, right.
People with 3rd grade educations maybe shouldn't have kids. Democrats made single motherhood a career, make sure you thank them.
Thank you to Victor and those who helped him along his way. I'm looking forward to this.
