  1. This brings me back to the days in Colorado Springs, CO where I was there with my 1973 dodge dart swinger 225 slant six with 4 speed trans, during my tour of duty in the Army at Fort Carson. I came home in the snow and my clutch went out so I put it up on jacks and pulled the trans and put a new clutch into my car that evening after work. Thanks go out to my father who taught me how to be a mechanic when I was a teenager in Montana at several gas stations that he owned. I didn't have everything you have in tools and other things so making do with what you have is what I did and it's always worked for me. One other thing is just think for a bit that our military has worked with the cheapest procured items and even with that we have always dot the job done. Thanks for what you do and I'm sure you are encouraging new mechanics to do what is right and to do it right the first time.

  2. My father also taught me to use two long metal bolts with the heads cut off and use them as alignment dowels to indicate the tranny to the bell housing.
I was doing this with jack stands so the dowels made it much easier.

  3. Back in the 80’s my father taught me to put a glob of grease inside the pilot bearing, then pound in a rod and the hydraulic pressure squeezes the pilot bearing out. It worked on all the ones I changed

  4. Well that’s interesting…. In the uk we call that clutch part the pressure plate not the basket….. interesting I’m learning other sayings from the states. And another thing I have noticed is that flywheel doesn’t have little dowels to align the clutch basket

  5. I have a lot of respect for you but to get that pilot bearing out all you have to do is pack the bearing full of grease then drive a socket in backwards with an extension in it and the hydraulics will push it right out. 2 minute process. I’ve also heard of people using bread but I like grease. Old school hot rodder trick:)

  6. Use heavy grease on cut up rags, then pack it in the pilot hole with a bolt and keep smashing that cut up rag full of grease, it'll hydraulic itself out..i think slices of bread may work, tho ive never tried bread..

  7. The Bestest brand starter you were about to install are junk. I sold those for many years at O's. They are not fully remanufactured, only the parts that fail are replaced. Glad you installed a fully reman. Ultima Starter.

  8. Used put grease in pilot bushing I.D.
then tap an old tranny input shaft to hydraulically push out bushing…then clean out crankshaft recess for oilite bushing(NO graphite, or lube of any type!)…place a piece of oak hardwood over bushing and use a large 4Ib stubby-handle and centrally and gently tap in to just crankshaft until flush…[never had or used the "welding method"(that is hazardous to anyone's eyesight). Not recommended AFTER you put new seal in!)
Other than this disagreement, I admire your "can-do P.M.A."
    and do learn mucho grande
about 2000 and beyond auto technology…I just cannot afford all the equipment and tools at my almost 75y.o.

    God bless you all

(Advise not to try working after turkey dinner…you could actually take a "trip-tover your
floor fan…and we may not see you next fall"!!😅😅…😢

  9. That was a very smart deduction in welding technique, we, the viewers, hope that every car mecahnic who faces similar problems think so thourougly as you do Ray, very good video indeed.

  10. I put a little grease on my little finger and coat the bearings and they don't fall out… also, tap on the u-joint with a hammer and it loosens the joint…
