I just removed a harmonic balancer. Those two holes take bolts that go through a puller. The center of the puller is threaded and it pushes against the crank using the two bolts threaded into the balancer to pull it. The puller I used looks like a peace sign. Only took a minute to take out once you find the threaded holes in the balancer.
You can never have too many magnets on a stick.. cause I'm really scared to drop deez nuts.. lol Thanks for sharing! I am currently doing this job… kind of a pain to say the least as are most of my jobs.. anyway thanks for the laughs and the information.. reminds me.. when you can take the pebble from my hand, you can leave… when u can take the bolt off of the fan, u can get to wrestle with the next 5 jobs.. on to using "the extended compound wobbly bit" with socket… lol again
😂😂 u got me with not dropping the nuts
A car with a throttle cable i thought they were instinct. Cool
Hey you there ??? Need help
Preparing to do this to 2001 Xterra and one thing I learned is you need to pull these balancers with serious puller. Spent some time measuring to make one.
I would think Rainman Ray would have a better assortment of pulling devices for whatever you encounter. Some of that pry bar prying was making me seriously nervous, and the puller action was not very much more comforting.
Back in the day I watched plenty of nice heavy duty Chevy crankshaft harmonic balancers get destroyed by using claw pullers on them.
Those two holes in the pully are made for two bolts to thread into and then removed with a crankshaft puller
As a Tech, this video is PAINFUL to watch. Coolant drain Screw (most Nissans) is located on pass bottom of rad, radiator surround is 2 piece, plastic clips, 2 second to remove. Then fan is infinity easier to remove, AC DOES NOT EVEN KINDA NEED Discharged, 4 easy bolts hold it to bracket, hoses are long and flexible. Crank pulley should be removed by the correct puller tool. Two long long bolts thread into pulley to pull on. ZERO reason to struggle with the wrong puller. A mechanic should have proper tools. REMOVE THE RADIATOR !! Don't damage the fins by banging every tool off it. Scary thinking people like this are working on vehicles and charging money. It's like he's learning on your car.
When you were talking about reversing connectors, it made me think about some things can be made fool proof, but not damn fool proof.
Are these old pathfinders worth buying? I’ve been looking at old 4Runners and Pathfinders in these year ranges as I want an older styled/rugged looking suv. These Pathfinders are a lot cheaper, i know that Toyota is always going to be good but I haven’t heard the same for Nissan.
Utilizing the 3/8 everyone swears has the same torque as the 3/4 impact! So everyone can now cry like the useless babies you are!
You didn't have to take the fan off to get the fan shroud off, it is a two piece design and the bottom part clips off from underneath the vehicle then you can pull it out with the fan still on. Did it today when changing belts and pulleys on my 2000 Infiniti QX4
You should try all of this in keeweenaw county of Michigan. Much harder
Remove the serpentine belt, then you can rotate the fan freely to access the 4th nut. It has to come off anyways. I might have done one recently on a 2001 with 290,000 miles.
Yet another video proving timing chains are superior to belts
He just called me a nobody… I do have time for that 2 hour video…
They should do a study on what things brake clean can fix; like sticky wire connectors, oily objects, ED, high interest on real estate, memory, etc.
Rainman needs a puller collection.
Nice explanation and tips 👌 great video
Looking at the crank pulley, aren’t those two small holes threaded to screw in bolts to push the pulley off?
Heh… I have a freshly machined 99 pathfinder block, pistons, heads etc… sitting in a box in my shop… anybody want it?
For future Nissans (I have a Xterra) the fan shroud actually splits in two which makes it easier to remove the fan.
Why didnt you use ratcheting wrench?
Tell me, why do you ’Muricans need such big engines?
Ray, this was a great video! I have so many friends that don't understand why a timing belt replacement is so expensive. You have illustrated the labor hours for this perfectly. As always, thank you for the great video and…have yourself a great day!
Just want to say, you're flashlights are just chunky magnets on sticks.
Nissan = Renault = French = No good. Great moneymakers for mechanics though and they do make wonderful videos.
Hi ray just finished watching taking off crankshaft, pulley learning a lot step by step and as always you be safe 🇺🇸🇺🇸
6:47 I started laughing when you said "I'm scared to drop these nuts."
I was rolling laughing when you said "That didn't sound right.." 🤣🤣💀💀
I've done this exact job. It sucks. The harmonic balancer would not come off like yours, accept when I used the puller, it tore the balancer in half. Had to drill and tap two new holes in the balancer with a bigger size and use another puller. Took me hours. I hate these 3.3 engines.
No rubber plugs to stop such leaking? Or just a piece of plastic bag and a zip tie.
distributer and v belts on a 2000.
Mystery of the missing magnets could be solved if you consider they would look like magic wands to little princesses .
Know what I'm saying???
Cheers Eric
Don't split hairs when it comes to YOUR standards ray. Do what you do best "A good job" as always Washington (UK).a
I have a 2001 Xterra with the 3.3, 311k miles and refuses to die.
Excellent video, Did not like the camera at the beginning, too fish-eyed. Thank You…
Love the vids. IMHO, if you touch the a/c, change the valves.
nope going to watch the outer edge of the belt guide bend out till it chips off, lucky you
Extensive compound wobblies lol. And a pun too!
puller via 6 mm threaded holes (10mm bolt) on the 2 holes) will never slide right off without damaging the cover or belt guide plate..
answer on the ac is…. remove line holding brackets and it's out of the way, no reason to drain, 8mm cover bolts via short extension and go
That timing belt looks to be in really good condition.
ok I may be drunk and just started, but HAHAHAAAAAAA pull the radiator for more room, guess you have never done a VG timing belt on a FWD
In your own shop, your own space, Ray you are the master of all you survey..!
You know Rainman, I bet it helps talking to us the viewer's. Filming most everything helps with reassembling. Well keep it up🔧🛠🪛
You touched it so in the customers eyes you own it. Service the AC valves.
been way your work for a while, long time full time wrencher, ,I have done many Nissan 3.0-3.3 timing belts ,never had to evac and recharge a/c ,just need to slightly move the a/c line with a nuge from pry bar. glad to see you have your own shop now. and I am rooting for you that it works out.
Too loose to ratchet, too tight for fingers. Bastard
Bring back oil changes… all is forgiven! 😉 Wow these engines are complex things… because they don't just come apart as they're supposed to! Loving the videos… thanks!
