I'm turning this off because I find the phone ringer to be annoying. See you in your shop videos.
My kids called these PT Loser.
The engine cranked pretty slow… do you think the battery is weak? I think there’s wisdom in testing every battery, as all sensors require a certain reference voltage… and a compromised battery can certainly disrupt /change all downstream reference voltages. Just a thought. You’re a dang good tech, so I’m in no position to criticize you… but I believe my insight has some merit.
Dang raiman, at first I thought you were b.s. but the more I watched the more I understood. Your not a scammy tow truck service, you are just misunderstood.
If I had to put up with some of your customers I would need to install a graveyard behind the shop.
You seem to be the electronics guy for all things government emissions related and then some.
I am learning to appreciate your ways oh
Sensi.
You are indeed the Rainman.â¤
I've watched your videos a lot so I need some advice how can a person get a broken spark plug out of a V6 3.0 it's on the passenger side front spark plug someone over tightened it and when I went to remove it it's snapped off
Your soldering skills are beyond commendable considering the environment. Well done, sir!
I actually liked the PT Cruiser for what it was; a cheap family car that's good on gas. They are kinda fun to drive.
The two things that brought me the most dread, when I was in the trade, were the words intermittent and oil leaks
FRICTION TAPE
I “seam ripper†is a Safeway to cut through electrical tape like that and works pretty fast
Ground wire?
Only thing I'd do different when making a splice like this is to 'stagger' the joints a bit so they're not all in the same location. 10-15mm (1/2 inch?) is enough. That way, if the heatshrink somehow slides off, the resultant bare wires aren't side-by-side. It also helps making a big 'bluge' in the loom at one location.
Having said all that, your method still works just fine!
always use mechanical connections where you can, solder where you cant reach. mechanical connection will and always is stronger than solder over long term. Of course, this only applies if you are doing mechanical connections properly.
26:56 You missed this. The wire is broken.
I like the heat srink tubing with the low melt solder in
Ah man the PT Bruiser has to be one of the most notorious vehicles around when it comes to electrical issues. I've changed that same cam sensor myself twice on my girlfriend's car. The first replacement cam just straight up didn't work, idk if it was a bad brand or what. The second one worked perfectly and has been fine 50k+ miles later.
A VW workshop manual says to use only yellow tape 😮
Well you will work on many PT Cruisers in the future which is also in the past.
Good job on that !! Just think – Someone just shortly before you handled those same plug and wires that you did and didn't notice that mess. (Or didn't care.) Actually their repair probably caused that big wire to rub.
Ray, in this application a western union splice would be faster, more secure and cleaner. You hold your soldering iron on the bottom center of the joint and spread your solder from the top. Fast quick and easy.
Doo do dee doode doo is back!
When soldering if you gently tap your wires after a second it shakes off extra solder that might cause a burr that you were concerned about. Actually not even a second. Solder remove heat and tap. Connection remains strong burrs go away.
It's great too see a fellow mechanic take the time to do a wiring job 100% CORRECT! ðŸ‘ðŸ»ðŸ‡ºðŸ‡² Great Job! I'm from Chicago, salt, salt turns into salt water. That salt whe liquid on an above freezing day get in all wire looms DTCs ALL DAY! That is 100% the way I wuld have done this in a High corrosion area! Excellent job ðŸ‘ðŸ»ðŸ‡ºðŸ‡²ðŸ‘ðŸ»ðŸ‡ºðŸ‡²ðŸ‘ðŸ»ðŸ‡ºðŸ‡²ðŸ‘ðŸ»ðŸ‡ºðŸ‡²
why tf you twist single wires… join them together, both facing forward to eachother then twist them together and solder. this type of conection is more durable. as solder can crack
ck. Engine light is on, lift hood. Yep its in there, closes hood. Charges customer 500 dollars. Not Ray no he fixes it.
Giving the repair industry a bad name.
you need solder flux. works wonders
Hey ray awsome job, i was thinking since its an intermittent back probe signal wires on cam and crank using 2 channels and close the hood while putting scope in buffering mode so it records sensors when reaching a certain temp signal waveform will drop out on of the sensors or could be a hair line crack on soldering dot in pcm, like your vedios ðŸ‘
I always twist bare wires together before soldering, that way the solder acts as glue and the current goes from copper to copper.
damn your young i left school in 1994
ok maybe im just old
Not sure if you know about the lineman splice, but I learned about it a month ago and it could hold your wires in place for you. I've been soldering for decades and didn't know about it and look forward to using it at some point.
Your electrical connection was NOT a recommended way to do it. Good MECHANICAL first then solder to bond. solder itself is a poorer conductor of electrical signals!
The changing the wires to one color reminded me of of myself in 1986 rewiring my 1951 chevy did the hole car with two wires one red one black seeing as I'm color blind so having colored wires made no difference to me lol.
That's by far the most annoying phone ring I've ever heard.
1:12 Why is that graph under the codes always blurred? What does it show?
Do you know when you caught the wires you don’t need to add more soldered that’s enough on there by Colton so you can stick them together like that Glenn noll I do that all the time nd it’s very strong
All this fiddly stuff would drive me nuts — uncomfortable even to look at. 😮
Hi Ray,
I wish you were the mechanic working on our Buick right now. The local GM garage is estimating a $4,000.00 repair cost right now for replacing steering column wire bundle and sensors along with spark plugs and transmission fluid flush. Feeling like I'm being taken by the dealer service department at this dealership.
Yet another soldering tip. Air Force crew chief, albeit many years ago. Twist the wires together, apply flux then solder.
Where I live it’s called the Pity Cruiser because we pity the sad, stupid owner.
Mac sells the pistol grip style wire stripper they come in handy
Have you tried the connectors that you just slide the wires into them and warm the shrink connectors that have solder and seatant in them. They workd great when room is available.
My mom had a PT loser years ago.lots of buggy probs with it. Not unlike the ones shown here.
LOL, Ray drove a PT Cruiser! Hahahahahahahaha…
Instead of normal electrical tape, you might consider, in some situations at least, using Scotch 2228 . It is called Mastic and it is applied with stretch. The instruction says pulling at least 3/4 extra length and the more stretch, the tighter the seal. What they talk about seal, is self vulcanizing behavior. Available in any color you want, as long as it is black! (I sometimes need color coding, so I still may need the ordinary tapes.)
On the other hand, your cloth type tape WAS the original electrical tape, 1920's on. What destroys the PVC adhesive (rubber) is the softening chemicals used in the PVC.
Like the solder repairs but it makes it stiff. If the repair vibrates a lot then the wires just on either side of that repair can and often do break. Zip those wires down on both sides of the repair if possible. It can save you another repair in the future. Take it from a Harley rider, vibration isn't a friend to soldered wires.
Rainman Ray and the Case of the 3 Hour Zip Tie Installation.
PT cruiser one of the many cars Chrysler built that turned there company into a garbage can!
You’ll repair the missing keeper clip with the tie wrap but then you’re gonna plug it into the camshaft sensor and let it rest on the crossover pipe compromising the wires?
I swear, I wanna find that specific ringtone and download it just so I can be like “doo-de-dooâ€
