In this video I have a look at a customer’s 2011 Ford Escape that doesn’t crank over…sometimes. The lady told me it happens about 3 to 4 times a day. She also told me that the cluster loses communication. I am not sure how she knew this but that would make sense for sure. Let’s have a look.

  1. Years ago I had a 2010 Mazda Tribute that would intermittently not start primarily after washing the vehicle the odometer would only show – – – – – – I diagnosed it as an instrument cluster (don’t remember the details of why) but it returned I got it back and dug deeper into it on a Sunday when the shop was closed I started thinking what was done to it previously one of the other guys put a battery in it I pulled the battery and battery tray and found that a wire was hooked on a plastic piece and pushed into a hole the wire was rubbed through and when moisture got to it, it would ground out and no start I fixed the wire put it back into the harness and away it went

  2. Really hated missing the video portion where you show the wiring Diagram My 2012 Escape cluster is missing up No turn signals but 4 way flashers work want to check the Power 12v & Ground Can You or some one Please tell me which pins are 12v & Ground Thanks

  3. I'm going to bet that she was told already that it was the cluster from another shop, came to you for a second opinion. Hoping it wasn't the cluster. When you told her it was the cluster she decided not to do it, but then changed her mind since two people have told her it's the cluster

  4. Got the same issues with ford clusters over this side of the pond in the uk, check codes and data then give the top of the instrument binnacle a love tap and try starting, if it works we take the cluster out and repair it then refit and test.

  5. Been enjoying your videos for some time now and am a backyard parts replacer.

There are 3 Ford related vehicles in my household (2006 f250 6.0 4×4 auto @45k miles, 2011 Mazda 3 2.5 6spd @ 173k miles & 2011 Lincoln MKX 3.7 awd auto @ 168k miles) with their age there is always going to be something that will need fixing and I've been having sporatic abs/traction control issues with the MKX that comes and clears itself and am now looking to get a scanner that may help me diagnose it as last night traction dash light lit up flashing, abs kept pulsating then car went into limp, no acceleration mode which after parking a couple minutes it cleared again, maybe a wheel sensor or tone rings so hoping a cheaper scanner would help test. I noticed a topdon box at about 6 minutes and wondering if that is a scanner in which you may have and can help me decide if it would suit most of my needs that would work with my 3 vehicles. Starting to look at the cheap TOPDON AD500 vs AD600 for a little bit more or is there any other scanner you may have experienced in this low price range that would better suit most backyard repair needs. Thanks in advance for any help in my scanner search.

  6. It literally makes no sense to me how every module needs to see every other module in order for these new cars to run. Similar to the Hyundai or Kias you deal with where the backup camera makes the car not run. This is not a sustainable path with these cars. My understanding is that Rivian uses a totally different system that only has 7 computers in it since they had the opportunity to build a network from scratch. Hopefully other manufacturers will have the balls to redesign their systems from scratch so that a backup camera doesn't render a car unusable or a faulty cluster doesn't leave you walking.

  7. Comment about customer not having shared the complete story. Over time, I have become suspicious that customers may be receiving training in what to state to a service writer. Perhaps similar to CIA training: Admit nothing, Deny everything, and Make counter accusations.

  8. Geeze eric you should hear some of the conversations that take place at my work 😂😂. Lets say if anyone's politically correct will get offended at my work place.

  9. Also make you you tell them not to use those little usb chargers that go in the cigarette lighters.

They put out a frequency that interferes with the TPMS and will set the light off, eventually leading to them not recognizing them anymore and requiring reprogramming or replacing.

My wife has a 2012 and that’s what happened to hers.

I out am aftermarket radio in it with wireless android/Apple car play and usb ports. She stopped using the little lighter thing and all the problems went away.

  10. Had cluster issue on ford focus. Lots of light/gauges issues. Manipulating the 32 pin connector affected it. Removed cluster, under scope there were some cracked solder joints on the board of the 32 pin receptacle. Retouched all of them, that was 6 mos ago, so far no further probs.
My only other cluster repair was replacing a fuel gauge stepper motor (different vehicle), that worked out well also.
But I hope I don't have any more cluster issues on either of my vehicles, because I'm sure I'm due for the next one to kick my a** .

  11. great video as always ! But i don't understand why the can network doesn't come back to normal when the cluster (which is fauty) is unplugged ?

  12. My 2011 Escape had an issue where the instrument backlighting wouldn't turn off and drained the battery. Turned out to be an iffy connection with the light switch. Just reached in through the side panel on the dash, unplugged the switch, re-plugged in and it hasn't been a problem since.

  13. I have this vehicle but the XLT trim. My son drives it, but I might just be keeping it forever. Fun little vehicle. I'm mad about the chipped valve that led to a defective head job and subsequent problems that I needed to fix myself. Including doing the infamous unkeyed crankshaft pulley. But now I know I can fix almost everything on it myself.

  14. When you said she changed her mind and now wanted it fixed, all I could think of was…great, now you have to pull that trim panel back out and not break those tabs completely off.

  15. Well, I don't know what happened.. we were having fun.. we were laughing.. making gender jokes and being inappropriate as we often are.. it was broke.. everything was as it should be.. then it fixed itself and it was all over. Oh wait.. it broke again..

Just awesome. This is one of the many reasons I also hang in there for the "stupid" videos and "Stuff we just did last week" along with the "Classic brake jobs".

Also.. the transition to the comment reminder.. sometimes it flows.. other times.. its not.

    Thanks for the video!
