  1. Great content. I like your attitude. I just got done doing the oil pan gasket on a 2001 3.0 4×4 ranger. It kicked my ass. I had to pull the transmission anyway, so I figured I'd do it while I was there. Then I looked at the bottom of the timing chain. Tons of slack. These things may be great little trucks. But, working on them definitely sucks your will to keep going 😂

  2. It might seem slow but you are 10 x’s faster than me. Lol. Good job not losing it. Have to always fix something to fix something. True. ❤

  3. I could see where a Ranger would get scrapped – as the repairs for these types of leaks would exceed the value of the vehicle (final model year was 2011) – this example Ray is working on isn't in the greatest of condition

  4. Fyi im on methadone 11 years now started when i hurt my back in the early 2000s wrenching on cars 15 hours a day 7 days a week no joke , Thats when docs handed out oxycontin like candy . I had no clue other then i felt better at the time.peace Ray,thanks for the videos

  5. Sorry man. I have one of these rangers. Mobile mechanic as a hobby and helping others.
Guess my ranger will drip forever. lol. Not doing this even with repair manual. Jeez

  6. Guess my oil pan is just gonna continue leaking lol I just put the transmission back in after doing the clutch and flywheel all on my back in the driveway

  7. I’m just about to start the job of replacing the timing cover gasket and water pump on my ‘99 Ranger. I pray the front part of the oil pan gasket is okay; otherwise, I’ll have to remove the pan. For what it’s worth, the Ford service manual dictates that the engine be removed from the vehicle to remove the oil pan.

  8. These type vehicles is what makes dyi so scary to try sometimes… next thing you know the job is spiralling out of control, your truck is 50% disassembled in your driveway, you suddenly are needing an additional 2000$ worth of parts, job is gunna take 4 full days instead of 1 or 2, and you are calling friends looking to borrow a mig welder cuz all you got is stick lol

  9. A diagram I found says, "Remove the three axle housing mounting bolts and lower the axle housing approximately two inches." For a oil pan they really didn't want it to be done easily.

  10. 15:30 – -ish. Late, but gotta say it. I have that engine support bar setup. Need to grease the threads and the washers. It works so much better if you do that. Your noodle arms will thank you next time, and so will the threads. 🙂 Used that bar a lot of times already, it's such a handy tool.

  11. You know, Ray, it's times like this where cursing a storm, and throwing various, non-vital items across the shop, is permitted. I'm not even a mechanic, and I'm making up new combinations of vulgar insults. Jesus, doggy-f*cking, Christ.

  12. I have a 2000 Ranger with this exact drivetrain in it. I have done a water pump and timing chain set in it, for exactly the same reason. I didn't try to get the oil pan off, as mine isn't leaking, but I now know that when that happens, I will either scrap the truck or pull the engine to do it. Wow, what a challenge to get that completed.

  13. I'm not happy that Ray is getting this upset. I am happy to see that even highly talented professional mechanics have the exact same gripes and struggles that us driveway mechanics do. 😅

  14. Wow i came here to find all the people yelling in the comments about some blantly obvious way to remove the pan with out doing all that thet both me and Ray missed…….and there is not a single one. It seems as thou this might actually be the best way! That is crazy!

  15. The question was asked during the Power train & Packaging engineers meeting, the answer was: "Why would anyone WANT to pull just the pan off?" The justification was "If the pan has to come off there's more serious issues so they'll just pull the motor." The Product Unit Lead knows that the vehicle will be out of warranty by the time a failure requires removing the oil pan. Ford says "Ship it as is."

  16. Thats exactly why I have a Love/Hate relationship with Ford vehicles. Engineered so You have to take the whole thing apart just to change a simple part, and they have the reliability of an Italian motorcycle

  17. Nice job and with that said I have worked on my share of FOTRD vehicles in my lifetime and this is a perfect example of why I will never own any FOTRD vehicles, they are purposely designed to deter owners from working on their own vehicle, any who keep up the good work Ray.

  18. As a guy who has a diploma in automotive engineering and part design, first year of the course was to drill into you how all the systems work and how to make them break 1 second after the warranty is up. Everything else is the marketing department and your own bias/favouratism.

  19. I know this comment is three days after this video went to air however in the first part I asked the question why put all this time & money into this pile ? It would be worth more at the crushers.IMO.

  20. Ah… Ray, man, I felt your pain through that !
That feeling that you want to give up, stamp your feet, and have a tantrum but just can't!
Well done for somehow keeping it together 👍
