The story of what led to Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine.

This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: http://www.pbs.org/donate.

Through in-depth conversations with multiple heads of U.S. intelligence agencies, diplomats, Russian politicians, historians and journalists, this special report chronicles events that shaped the Russian leader, the grievances that drive him, and how a growing conflict with the West exploded into war in Europe.

From acclaimed filmmaker Michael Kirk and his team, the documentary traces how Putin went from low-ranking KGB agent to longtime Russian president. It delves into his crackdown on dissent — and the media — inside Russia. It reveals how he has tested the West’s appetite for confrontation over and over again, including in Ukraine in 2014, as he’s tried to expand Russia’s global footprint. And it raises difficult questions about the path forward.

Watch the documentary for an urgent examination of what led to this historic moment and how it could still unfold.

  2. A lot of people in Russia can’t do anything about Putin even though they hate him. They’re hostages of their own government. He knows that he will be prosecuted (in his own country ) once he looses presidency/ therefore he will do literally ANYTHING to remain on the throne and keeps the “untouchable” status.

  3. Putin is a dying desperate man. He wiped out his entire military to make a point and he miserably gailed. That's a dying dictator kicking and screaming. They all go out the same way it seems like .

  4. Better than GwB for damn sure, screw cuckpubs and rubio and all these degenerates who finally found power with trump. what a vile nation we live in to think marko the rube deserves to be anything else after this

  5. The fact that American president (trump) is Now accept that united States and west ,are the root of this problem for starting the war by creating orange revolution ,show Putin was right. 😂 He is the great.

  6. The last part of this video shows how pbs obviously still has TDS, Trump derangement syndrome. And that is why i will not subscribe to this hard leaning radical left company. There is no way this should supported by tax payers, weather left or right propaganda.
