Come along in this video as I start the process of swapping out a rotted sub frame in a customer’s Toyota Prius. He wants the frame replaced, as well as the control arms, rear brakes, brake hoses and rear brake lines.

Had a lot of you asking where I got the ends that go in my sockets so you can pound on them with a hammer with out destroying your socket or extension. Here they are. If the links don't work just google the part number and see who has them.

how do mechanics remember which bolt goes where after removal? lol
Being on the concrete makes my knees hurt!
Eric I was watch you change a rusty sub frame , let's say the car was always put in the garage would it rust out just as quick
I never thought that you would exclude seniors from watching your show.
You have for members only , ok it that's what all you want is more money
I'll hit the unsubscribe button . Call me when you change your mind. Ben Alberta Canada.
2:22 I respect a vehicle owner who is willing to put money into maintenance and repair. You could trust the car for many years after this update service. Keep it going.
You don't get forearms like that making YouTube comments people! Mr. O knows what he's doing.
After watching most of these videos I've always had the feeling that with your sense of humor and just general demeanor that we could be friends. But, after lifting that sub frame and announcing that you farted a little bit, I'm positive! 😂😂
I'm surprised you tackled a job like this. Seems like a job for an auto body shop.
Watch that back old man.
Im 65 and had 3 spine surgeries in last15 months by highly rated surgeon at The Houston Medical Center, one of the best medical facilities in the USA if not the world.
I've been recoupingbfrom the last one watching you.
Actually started on the first surgery may 2023.
Gotbtired of rainmaker Ray and Kenny.
Powell good.
They call my clip remover an
"end nipper".?
That's the deal?
That's just the cutest cradle.
Never cease to amaze me 😮. Living in the southwest how much the salt on the roads affects the economy in the east. Seems like nearly 90% of the jobs he does are rust related. So must be all the other mechanics in the region. Auto manufacturers couldn't ask for better help mates than governmental entities spreading auto destroying chemicals on the roads. Between mechanics, parts dealers, auto sales lots wonder if the economy would fail if cars just lasted longer?
EYE PROTECTION PLEASE !!!!!!
That subframe looks needlessly complicated with a lot of layered parts and crevices for dirt to gather and hold water. Bad design!
Ooh part 2😊
Changed the lower arms on my Scion xA, but could not turn the nuts on the rear bolts. Had to loosen them on the bolt side. Looked at the nut when it was off, it had some teeth on the crown that bit into the sub frame. So when I saw you tighten the nuts, I was yelling at you to check the nuts, because it may skew your torque readings.
Boy you could come up with some new south main auto t shirts… With slogans from some of the videos…102.7 the rust….
102.7 The Rust
I own 2 of these Prius. Both are Texas cars all their lives. Absolutely no rust. Salt does a number on steel.
Love the tools presented here to make things easier. I worked on my wife’s Prius today. Just the cabin blower motor needed replacing. That is basically the extent of my mechanic ability.
Just a small point regarding the replacement of the Prius front subframe it would have been a little better if you had given it a quick respray with a rattle can and a wirebrushing before you sprayed it. Otherwise I consider you to be an excellent mechanic and your customers should consider themselves lucky to have you.
For you guys down south that spray is fluid film, it prevents rust and Eric didn’t put it on that sub frame would’ve rotted out in the PRNY before it got out the door ! Welcome to the Northeast!
Just when I think I have all the tools I could possibly need you show me a socket smasher adapter! Curse you Eric ! lol off to Amazon be right back…
The new frame looks like it's not going to last very long either has a lot of rust and corrosion already.
What are the odds its cat convertor remains intact over the summer?
Bought me one of these 3rd gen's back in 2021. Figured gas was just gonna keep going up with the current regime in power. It had a bad engine and I found one from a 4th gen for $1000 with 50k miles. It's a straight swap. Just gotta change one connector on the harness. Gets 40-49mpg. Car had 246k now I'm pushing 290k miles 3 years later. Cars kinda ðŸ’â€â™‚ï¸ðŸŒˆ but it's a great beater. Not bad for a $4k total investment.
Got nervous when I saw you giving those old crusty bolts the no mercy reversey treatment a couple of times there, thought you might have been at risk of snapping a captive nut off inside the body 😬 Happened to me recently on a similarly crusty '02 Corolla. Had to get the grinder and welder out for that one 🤦ðŸ¼
A lot cheaper than a new rust bucket.
I love the neon check engine light Eric. 😂 You are bad ass brother. 🤙
Like road salt, heat is also a corrosion catalyst. Oil-em or Lose-em.
Sure glad that I dont live in the rust belt…2005 Saab 93, no rust ..Vancouver Island Bc Canada…..my sympathies
Kinda comforting to see even professional EricO ends up scrabbling about on the floor like I do now and again
Why did he separate the control arms off the old subframe?
What we used to say in the shop: Jack up the Radiator Cap and roll a different car under it.
These things weren’t worth saving when they were new! Throw in the crusher!
Shouldn't the use of fluid film reduce the tightening force, I think it lubricates bolts as the go in and changes the torque values?
Man, if we could come up with affordable rustproof frames/bodies, a lot of these problems could be eliminated.
Eric: Gasp, “Well that was easy!†😂
This is much like watching an orthopedic surgeon doing their craft. Precision and grunts to reassemble a leg from hip, knee, to ankle.
Would you add a link to the adaptor you use for hammering out the tie rod end? I have to have that. Thanks in advance.
Ida sprayed the new S F with Rust-Oleum
39:02 I see what you did there.
Great
America
I have been impressed by the bolts on that vintage of toyota vehicles. It seems like the plating is good enough to outlast the parts they go into and I've only had to deal with a couple broken bolts on my vehicles.
I live in minnesota, I replaced the subframe under my 94 Saturn at the same time that I did the clutch. The subframe was beyond rusted out when I did that. It was bad but we definitely use salt on the roads in the winter and that's what made it bad. But it also rusted out the the body or structure of the car under the doors in the backseat I replace the timing chain did not use enough Lactaid on the intake manifold cam and destroy the engine…. so I told the car home took what I wanted out of it and junked it.
Find a southern Prius with a blown engine the put the engine from the rust bucket into it.
Tool needs some backup lube
I love you, man. You're my entertainment and educational guide. DEEZ NUTS will NEVER not be funny….. like farts.
I hear mower man is back
I have a 02 Sienna with 174k, only rust on it is right rear subframe. I'm having a frame shop repair it. I don't want a car payment for a while
