Today is a day of sad endings and new beginnings. Winter has begun with 8″ of snow, and I bring out the Farmall Super A to plow the driveways. Then it’s time to move the tractors around in the barn and get out the Farmall MD. We pull the MD down to the shop and I begin disassembling it. This is the beginning of a winter-long project to get it running after 20 years. And I have some news about a sad ending, but put it in perspective of life and death on the farm.

Just seeing you start working on the MD , brings back memories of the stories that my Grandpa used to tell me about him farming with his MD. I cannot wait to see yours running again.
Watching your older videos, I was impressed with the care and attention you gave Marvel. Nature takes its course. Re: the crack in the head should be fine–I was always told by my Dad and a couple of other farmers I sometimes work for that brazing is better for a cracked head than welding. As I'm sure you already know, brazing is done at a much lower temperature, making it the best choice for cast iron. It doesn't get hot enough to cause the casting to become brittle and / or warp. I suppose that these days there's probably some fancy plasma and electronic method that works on cast iron, but your experience shows a favorite theme of mine: often low-tech solutions turn out top be the most practical by far!~~Jeff in CT

I spoke with an Inernational mechanic many years ago. He also talked about the problem with those heads cracking. They used them in northern Canada. Forgot what for. I think they used that engine in crawlers. He told me that if they changed the timing by 1 degree, they could get rid of the problem. I can't remember if they advanced or retrarded the timing. Too many years ago. HJD
You are a 'real farmer' I despise corporate micro managed factory farms, they have no respect for nothing!! The land, the water, their animals, their employees, nothing,! Including life itself; And most of all no conscience,, they only care about theirself,, profits,, but when ya take care of you're own animals, land, equipment, ya get an attachment, you take care of it, it takes care of you, it becomes a bond, ya learn, ya try to do better, when it works out ya feel the reward, when it doesnt, ya feel the pain, wonder if ya could of done better, it hurts, and ya learn, so ya try harder, and it gets better, and U get better, sometimes it just doesnt work out, but ya honestly know ya done the best ya could, and ya keep moving, and ya keep caring, learning, and constantly trying to improve where ya can, and what ya have, and it gets better..next time things dont pan out, ya know ya done the best, u or anyone else could do, doesnt change anything, but it just keeps us moving in positive direction. Thats a Real Farmer;..new beginnings are everyday on a real farm, it a 'renewable resourse', the real challenge is to keep it that way;..
I would do a compression test on each cylinder, determine what amount of air can pass the piston/ cylinders and valve/seats.
There are states that allow your body to be composted. New York is one.

Thank you for the way you told the story of Marvel. Part of me didn't want to comment after such a long time; but, for me, Marvel encapsulates what makes your videos so good -a finely tuned balance of your obvious love of the land and your animals, your impish sense of humour, ("You wanna hear a joke?", "No."!) and finally, but by no means least, your enquiring mind and philosophical approach and the beautifully reasonable response to the questions you raise? THANK YOU
Pete, I very much enjoy watching you working on the equipment. I think it's an important part of what goes on at the farm, and I'm glad that you show it to us.
Such a sweet eulogy RIP
