Today is the day when Sammy goes to the butcher. We sort him from the other Dexter cattle and bring him in from the pasture. We back the livestock trailer up to the cattle pen and load him. Loading cattle is usually not difficult, but since he was a bottle-fed calf and is not hand-shy, it takes some work to get him onto the trailer, and we have to resort to using a hot shot to finish the job. On the way to the butcher we talk about Sammy the steer’s life. We unload Sammy at the butcher and say our goodbyes. Finally, I talk about the emotions behind raising animals that will eventually be butchered, and the connection we all need to make between the life of the animal and the meat we eat.

I have an old turkey I just can't butcher. She's been known to attack anything that bothers her chickens and once ate a snake! She"ll stay around till her arthritis gets too bad. Her name is Hera, wife of Hurcules the Big Broadbreasted Tom who saw his last reign in January 2025. 48 lbs dressed! Hera will guard the next batch of turkeys in Spring. Blessings.
Hey Pete, when you drop off cattle at the butcher, who gets the hide? You or the butcher?

You're so sad, sorry about that. That's why I name them all Deep Freeze l, Deep Freeze ll, and so on doesn't hurt when ol Deep Freeze XLVlll goes bye bye because that's where they are all headed.
RUN, SAMMY, RUN ! ! ! !
He looks pretty small!
Just happened to come across this particular episode, and the changes that have occurred at your farm over the last 3 years is remarkable :
1) change over of the cattle barn.
2) Farmall C restored.
3) new stock trailer.
4) Tacoma replaced by F-150
However, despite all the changes, you still provide great content. Congratulations !
I love your videos Mr Pete. Do you mind me asking what type of watch you’re wearing? I’m trying to find one that will last on the farm.
Sammy knows no one comes back from the trailer ride.
Pete, We enjoy your videos and appreciate the thoughtful insight you provide. We recently had a calf escape and could not get her back … she went wild. We were able to catch up to her after about 10 days. I'm not going into details but we were not able to get her processed so it was all a sad pointless end. As we are new and trying to learn and get better, we decided we need to know how to deal with emergency dispatch and dressing out a beef on our own. Have you ever considered giving a workshop like this to a small group? We're probably 5 hrs away but that's really nothing to us if we can avoid a situation like we went through. Regards!
he trusted you, you upheld that trust by sending him off in a pretty calm way – I hope he was treated decently after that
Not a farmer, but my brother in law (who was) donated us a day-old lamb from a litter? of three (so wouldn't survive) which we bottle fed. It mowed our lawn all summer, the local butcher advised to feed a bag of cattle nuts towards the end to add weight, then collected her and delivered a box of chops and roasts two days later, all in exchange for the skin. Our 7yo daughter was a bit upset, but happily tucked into her roast lamb dinner. TBF the lamb was getting a bit of a handful towards the end. Full-grown sheep do not make good pets!
This was West of Ireland, and that lamb had a summer eating grass and lying in the shade rather than its neck wrung or being left for the foxes and crows.
A pleasant way of life.. Thanks for sharing..
Do you vaccinate or worm?
You did everything you could for Sammy. ⤠A farm is a farm, not a no-kill animal shelter/sanctuary or a petting zoo.
Unfortunately most people are totally disconnected from where their food, clothing, etc. and everything else that they
use or have comes from and how it is made, grown, raised.
I would pray for a speedy, stress, and pain free 'end', and thank him for his sacrifice.
Well think it’s just the way ya feel at the time
It's always difficult. Even my grandfather, a life-long farmer, had difficulty differentiating farm animals from pets. You do what you have to do, and justify as you must.
