We’ve tested three Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 phones, and they all have a heat problem. Our OnePlus 15 review units shut down from overheating during a stress test, and we have data that other new phones from realme and REDMAGIC are also getting incredibly hot — or are forced to throttle performance drastically just to stay cool. This data doesn’t look great for Qualcomm and raises big questions for the entire Android industry, especially with the upcoming Galaxy S26 series not expected to have new cooling solutions.
Note: During this video, Scott refers to the REDMAGIC 11 Pro as a Nubia phone. However, REDMAGIC is now an individual company, so the phone is not connected to Nubia. Android Authority regrets the error.

Hey all. If you want more data on these phones, we have it below:

Its like Intel and AMD all over again
Its the highest performance chip on a body that has no active cooling. That's why its so hot and throttles
Qualcomm want to push out big numbers and with big numbers i mean with temps as well , but Qualcomm fan boys will defend that lol
Qualcomm has such a big hard on showing better numbers than Apple, that they are willing to sacrifice public perception to keep their echo chamber alive.
Mediatek figured out how to be cold while doesn't compromise its performance.
finally someone saying how garbage is this snapdragon
google, android phone makers and SoC makers need to work in optimization, Apple is still raising the bar just fine thanks to the better sotfware and APIs
Sticking with my OP12 another year anyways so let it burn baby burn, One Plus inferno burn baby born, wah wah wah wah
Exynos 2600 test please
Good thing I got X9 pro
Well, Qualcomm now competes with Amd fx processors
I found out that if you don't have a proper GSM reception where you live or sit durign the day , the SD chipsets are getting stupidly hot. I Don't know if its a faulty baseband design or can be solved with soft-firmware tho.
Don't listen to android authority they are more like pixel authority they have the pixel stick so far up their ahss it's so funny 😂 ofc pushing such a beast to it's limits will overheat the phone the benchmarks are rendering at 4k resolution drawing up to 17W !! NOTHING and I mean NOTHING you could do on your phone would push it like that 😂 not even emulating literal pc games you can easily emulate PC games and use a cooler and it won't even throttle this is completely normal because the chips got so damn fast and powerful ofc they will react like this when you let them run to their absolute max … You won't be emulating PC games at 4k on your phone will you ? Android authority failed to mention this they are so biased 🤦â€â™‚ï¸ they are acting like doing everyday stuff and playing android games will cause this 😂 not even emulating PC games will cause this … Serious Android authority get a grip
TSMC doesn't want to innovate with more efficient nodes and more advanced chipmaking machines, since it's pretty much a monopoly…
What about the Xiaomi 17?
Company uses very poor thermal paste
Can you use thermal grizzly thermal paste and test?
Oppo knew this problem 😂
This is the one of the worst kind of testing BS Vids I've seen. All this moron ever based his opinion is using benchmarks and that's it. No further testing done. That people are thinking its the Snapdragon 810, 888 and 8 gen 1 all over again. No using the phone in ways that would reflect all the possible usage of a consumer may do. No extreme gaming test, full day camera testing, no usage of photo and video rendering, editing and other such tools.
Yep at this point these gaming phones are right, cooling was neglected in the new designs.
Can I expect the chip to be hot like that during normal use?
Not everybody doesn't have a gaming pc
If u want the heat from the cpu out of the phone it as to go to the outer phone if it stays inside the cpu is gonna over heat. And the liquid cooling is working but its mostly over the battery so the battery is cooler and the cpu about 2-3°C colder. And the fan on the redmagic 11 pro cools it very good. And u can buy a magnet cooler to it then its gonna be even colder. And 50-55 is not that hot for the cpu temp. Most phones goes to 60-80°C Cpu temp while, the outside is cold but the inside is cooking or both.
The consumers don't have problems using the same chips for at least three years but you the tech YouTubers keep pushing these guys too much. If a flagship phones come out this year with the same processor as the one we're using now you are going to make them look ugly to the consumers. When a phone has 1.5K screen resolution to keep cost down you criticize it even though you know you cannot tell the difference between 1.5 and 2K. If a phone is doing much much better but if specs don't match what it's doing you don't agree with it but you sympathize with those that are doing less but with higher specs. This is how you guys are destroying the market.
All I see with these results is QUALCOMM desperate to show that it can beat Apple. Achieving this by dumping raw power instead of doing the hard work of refining, compute process and efficiencies.
Glad I chose mediatek because of these problems
The reference device most likely has “For Galaxy†clock speeds and better cooling to achieve better results
1:03 Well no wonder they added even more cooling lol
They should try to make processors more efficient, not faster. I dont game on my phone. I dont need a faster processor than the snapdragon 8 gen 1+. If they can make the snapdragon 8 gen 1+ super efficient with double the battery life, that would be amazing!
I will buy phone using mediatek dimensity
I bought the Oppo Find X9 Pro, no problem at all. In my opinion the best phone of 2025.
So this is the repeat of snapdragon 8 gen 1? Kinda amusing lmao
You know it's very hot when the Fahrenheit equivalent reaches more than 104 and I can't mentally convert it anymore in Celsius. 😂
Soooo need an case that has a back fan if I want to play anything demanding…. Looks like phones have to get thicker and durable now 😂
I would buy the OP15 if it had the beloved alert slider, but I will wait for OP16 where they bring it back 😃
I guess Samsung won't order a special overcooked version for the S26 ðŸ˜
The chip is called Snap'Dragon' for a reason🔥😂
I love how snapdragon gets hotter and hotter every time they upgrade while apple chips getting cooler and cooler
is it that throttiling and heat issues becouse of that all big core configaration?. i think mediatek introduced that configaration first in D9300 with 4+4 configaration but they didn't keep that all big core idea. over clocked version of that chip comes in hybrid all big core configaration 1+3+4. 4 big cores for efficiancy. they still follow that configaration till D9500. i think that was the one of the key factor of MT CHIPS efficiancy. snapdragon introduced that all big core idea in 8 elite. it was also a hot mess. 8 elite gen 5 and 8 gen 5 also follow that all big core configaration still have that heat issues. i heard that they using 2+3+3 for next gen chip. hopes it will fix that heat.
Oneplus 15, oppo find x9 Pro, vivo x300 Pro too expensive phones, and thorolling problems
Well the Samsung s25 ultra outperforms the iphone17 pro max in gaming and real world use already so… There is that. On paper the 17 pm should be destroying the s25u but it doesnt. Anyways.
10:26 I was planning to buy but the recent LAUNCHES have shown AWKWARDLY WAY HIGHER PRICES than their throttling temperatures.
Same heating issues and same buttery smoothness. Only thing that has changed is the name.
Red magic wins then 🙂
I have a game pad with a fan, it would definitely help when I want to playa game for 3 4 hours 😀
Luckily most people don't spend $1000 on a phone to do nothing but benchmarks with it.
Benchmarks or how hot devices get when doing benchmarks mean next to nothing to me because benchmarks are designed to be the most extreme scenario that will almost never be achieved through regular use.
While it is true that almost nobody is likely to push these phones to these absolute overheating maximums it does concern me that my phone may be able to get hot enough to harm me and from what I can see all these tests are done with no case which is not how most people will carry their phone
I have red magic 10s pro. Glad I'm not missing out much.
Yeah what is good with all that power when it can't sustain itself that long.
That is why I went with red magic instead of Samsung. I used to be a Samsung guy. Even though Samsung gonna have the better chip next year, and keep running games like genshin and wuwa 60fps consistently for 15 minutes I would rather pick a phone that is last year chip that has better cooling that can run the games that can keep the game a constant 60 fps for 2hr+
So is it safe to go with Dimensity 9400 and 9500
For the last 10 years technology have the same issues, for me is that the hardware are more evolved than software and is not balanced like years ago when Android first came out, do anyone have a Nokia that overheat? on that time software was more evolved than hardware for that reason some phones was slower.
Todays software are very demanding with a tons of sh¡ts that nobody uses and don't wanted on their phones like IA (at least people that still uses their brain) and developers prove that point removing all sh¡ts, tweak, optimize Android to run on very older phones.
Are we back at snapdragon 810 again
