In a previous video https://youtu.be/MVyPmI3vQw0 we had a look at a Subaru that did not want to give up its keys after being put into park. I now have the part to fix so let’s yank out the shifter and get this car back on the road. -Enjoy!

As a SMA fan since ~2016 – I can say i've never missed a video – But this video today – saved my bacon big-time with the wife's car. I felt the same level of anxiety putting that erector-set of a shifter back together… You've got a loyal Patreon until you give this gig up – you entertain, educate, and of course, sooth us with your lyric-based poetry… Appreciate all the help sir. We (The entire YT community) owe you big-time for dragging us along your adventures.
Subaru had extended the warranty on this part, call them with your vin number!
What a PITA but at least you don't have to buy the entire assembly
Thank you so much for this video! It helped me fix my issue. The part where you kept trying to show the volts stay around 12 and it kept working and dropping to zero when put it in park. By pushing the volt meter into the connector it made it work. That made me realize that it was just a bad wire connection for the pink wire and once I made a better connection it fixed my problem. Ugh. That took me hours to figure out but, it works now. Thank you again for sharing your hard work on your repair.
Thank you for making this video, you made it easier for me to do this repair on my 2014 Impreza Wagon.ðŸ‘ðŸ»
Thank you very much, just fixed my 2017 Forester!
You guys deserve better automotive designs to maintain, that assembly is a disaster.
how much does this job cost ballpark…
Subaru Outback 2.5l 2013
The problem is the key when they got old of use it happens had the same problem and then started using the second key never again that problem,so mad a new spare keys!
I know this is years old, but when you put that back nut on to tighten the shift cable. What's that plastic piece with the little metal C clamp in it called on the back side of the shift assembly. That part was complete rust on mine and crumbled when I was putting the shift cable through it.
Ya always gotta wiggle the jiggly bits!!
Good video. I'm no mechanic, but this just happened to my 2021 Subaru Crosstrek 3 times before I acted. It's been through 3 winters so I checked the battery. It's fine….amazingly. I'm not good with DYI anymore and It's under warranty so I dropped it off at the dealership. I wish I knew exactly what they will do. Hope they have some competent guys there…
Eric O you have a great work ethic and hilarious sense of humor. Your still the best mechanic 🧰.
Peace and love from Clearwater Florida
The ole knob polisher 🤣
Thank you very much for this video. I really helped my mechanic fix my car
Kriss Kross I rememmber
I closer look at the old switch and how it may have fouled would have been interesting to see.
Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Obviously, the chicken! Think about it for a moment…who the hell ever heard of an egg having an orgasm?
That's about the most convoluted complicated piece of plastic crapolla I've ever seen! lol I don't know how anyone would do that in the vehicle. You amazed me once again, Eric. Calm and steady wins the race.
Too cool but what a pain. My 2016 Crostrek which is still under Subie's extended warranty runs out end of Oct 2022. It occasionally hangs the key up. I noticed on mine when you turn the key to off, you must push the key in a tad to move the assembly down and then all the way to then remove the key. I was not sure exactly if it was a mechanical or an electrical problem. I removed the clamshell from the column. I tried removing the plug down at the base of the ignition switch. Nothing. Then I removed the upper one where the key light is. A youtube shows that as a cure but kills light and door key charm.. It has three wires. Mine didn't kill chime or light. Interesting. But with it unplugged, a cold start gets a surging idle between 1000-1700 rpm. Telling you No! No! No! Put that back.
So on mine at least it was just so random and the key felt funny, I sprayed a shot of WD40 in the keyhole. It now has been working like new.
The dealer will probably not fix not broken. I wonder if, under warranty, they replace the whole shift lever. I can't imagine them rebuilding it like you as much as they charge.
how much labor should I charge for this operation?
Thank you for showing us the difficulty that this shifter gives you.
This is great. I started watching because I have this problem, but I stayed because it was so entertaining. This feels like the way my buddies and I would trash talk our way through driveway auto repairs. Laughed out loud a couple of times. Your video taught me two things. 1-Everything that needs to be done to perform this fix, and 2-There is no way I am going to try this fix myself. I tend to slash and burn my way through a repair, applying layers of rig job recoveries toward the end. I'll leave this job, and its frustrations, to the pros. Thanks for a great video!
Great Thank you
Cindy will be very happy also LOL
what is the name of the part that you changed and how can I ask for it?
awesome video, thanks….
One of your best videos.. humourwise! ðŸ‘ðŸ˜ðŸ‘
Thanks for the preview. I have to do this today .
Your pain is my gain
Suburu has always created torture devices for mechanics
Is there a source that we can view to learn how to disconnect and reconnect the shift cable? It was nicely displayed in the video, but I would like a manual guide if possible.
Hi, I’m from down under in AUS and have the same problem. My local dealer quoted less than $450.00 to do the same job, including parts., I was considering to do it myself but after seeing you do the job I will book it in and save myself a lot trouble.
Love your vision, clear vision of the job, great work…
Great video very informative. Thank u.
Yet another reason that automatic transmissions should be illegal.
Now what lesson did we learn. Oh yeah, never ever buy a Subaru. Because first of all whatever breaks you will wait 2 weeks for the parts. Then you will have to go around your backside to install it.
There's your problem lady the oatmeal creme pie filling JR jammed down in this thing.
Subaru should send you a check every month for working on their JUNK. I have dealt with them enough, never ever buy one.
I’m not mechanically inclined. What’s a fair price for this job? Can any mechanic do it or do I have to go to a Subaru dealership?
Hoping I dont need to do this job. Lol
Awesome Job! I will be fixing my car this week because I now think I can do it! Thankfully I have a shop to use, I Teach Auto Body, I am just not happy about how much work it is!
We love watching your videos. Even though we do not work on engines like you do, we always learn something interesting. Plus , you are very entertaining with your comments.
