The end has come… The Final Day of the 30 Day challenge in Switching to Linux. In this video, I go over some of the obstacles I had to overcome and some I didn’t. Finally, the everlasting question will be answered, Will I continue using Linux or revert back to Windows?
Timestamps:
0:46 The Issues
5:12 The Positives
10:23 Annoyances
16:00 Conclusion
The Issues:
-Graphics Drivers are still a bit hit and miss for AMD Vega Cards
-Missing Adobe Products (Photoshop / After Effects for advanced projects)
-Still need windows for my Oculus VR
-Fragmentation in the Desktop space
The Positives:
-SSH / SCP is native in terminal. I use these daily and so much better than having to launch PuTTy or WinSCP.
-Overall less stuff, Linux just runs far cleaner without all the added bloat
-Free Software – So much to choose from that I have just started scratching the surface
-Video Editing is faster than Windows in my experience with Kdenlive
The Annoying:
-Webcam required considerable amount of tinker and extra programs
-Wine is horrible
-Some driver issues with obscure hardware .

My Linux expirement has been for 6 years now. I'm using Nobara Gnome version now.
Thanks, Chris, you are the best at explaining the how and why. There are just some GAMES I haft to use windows still but everything else is Linux. You have helped a lot in scripting and just having fun. Isn't hat is what computers are for to have fun? I would say in about 2 to 3 years Linux will be on top instead of Windows. They are just making it harder and less safe to use windows and with 11, come on that thing is a nightmare.
Macbooks are the best.
Does ANYBODY ANYWHERE work a paid job on Linux?
(crickets)
I'm late at the party, but enjoyed watching this series!
Oh haha, this is before he tried Arch..
You don't have to choose, it is easy to windows with or beside linux
thats the second video of your where audio and video tracks feels like theyr not in sync. You dont clap or something at the begining of filming?
I've used Linux for a little while now and I've never considered the thought of switching back to Windows
Know this is an old video but, Distros are like Makes and Models of Cars. Pontiac GTO vs Pontiac Catalina is the same comparison of Centos vs Fedora. They are both Redhat just some different options and internals.
I love Gnome (and GTK stuff in general).
What I did was install Arch, install gnome (and gdm), install nvidia stuff, theme it, download steam (with proton)… done.
Why graphic designer not like Linux operating system?
Great series. I finally saw this series! I just looked back and as of day, I'm about 2.5 months into POP!_OS 20.04 LTS. 😀
I refuckingfuse to go back to Windows. I may concede and use a VM for one program (Guitar Pro 7) if it gets buggy in PlayOnLinux, but otherwise… No Windows for me.
Yeah, but can it run Crysis?
I am on my 6th year of using Linux 🙂
Free sync has been supported in Linux since kernel 5.0.
If I wanted to game I’d get a PlayStation 5.
How is GIMP Shop as an alternative for Photoshop?
do you know you look like Mulder from the x files?
I've installed manjaro KDE on my system nvme card. Now, I can't figure out how to install the dirvers for my ATI RX 5500 TX card. I have downloaded and unpacked the drivers to the a folder in Downloads, but I can't figure out what to do next.
If you want a challende choose Slackware.
One size doesn't fit all. That why I hate Windows.
I’ve been running dual boot for the last 15 years – at least…. and eventually moved to a dual screen system where the only trace of windows is a win 7 running in virtualbox and displaying seamlessly…. works great! Had to do his because my job includes developing Access databases… and with the best will in the world, ‘wine’ isn’t up to the task yet. Everything else… not a problem – gimp, darktable, inkscape, scribus, blender, audacity, kdenlive, netbeans… I have all the tools I need – and libreoffice can certainly run word macros…….
Display Drivers are a nightmare!
Issues with shutting down. Just hangs on final line! Many people has this issue. Read so many forum pages! Tried all their proposed solutions. This was the same for ubuntu 16.4 and 18.4 (server and desktop), mint 19.3, lubuntu. Suspect bios, swapped motherboards to solve.
Now I have a second system with the same issue. Old core 2 duo system.
Flexbackup still has internal error. This is after 6 years of using it! It doubles and triples files or the number of times the directory is deep. Did find a manual solution.
Mail clients are horrible!
Office compatibility is not good. Especially excel. Cant use most of the sheets emailed to me. World is still on ms office! And ms office dictates! Can't talk to the world if you are speaking an isolated language.
Cad software is mostly non existing.
Engineering software does not exist!
Cat needs to give an update
I think Zorin OS is best for beginner as it has a perfect Windows like feel and the apps like LibreOffice is by default optimized to give a feel of MS Office (though I recommend using OnlyOffice). But overall, Zorin OS is best for beginners.
Thumbs Up! Great series!
Interesting series… Thank you.
ok….just finished the series…outstanding CT, many thanks.
On the fragmentation. The cons are that it makes it way harder to catch on mainstream. The pros are that unlike with windows and mac there is no 1 terrible decision that can straight up ruin the OS. If one distro ruins itself you can just pick another and most of what you know carries over. If something more major happens then someone will care enough to fork it and do it right. Its a tortoise and the hare situation. Windows and Mac may be in the lead but they will and already have been getting sloppy. Might take a while but I believe linux will eventually start becoming mainstream.
have you tried any tiling window managers?
This was a very helpful series. I was curious about Linux and your tutorial was very enlightening.
Hey Chris, good work i love to watch you're Chanel… here is a suggestion for you if you would like to do it. how to configure DD-WRT, there are so much thing in this it's hard to setup for a basic user, and the one online are to old and or not so very good too, so think about it. and thank's keep linux going or commig i'm quitting windows too.
Windows bloat isn't an issue if you just use CCLEANER and i've never seen updates throw in software (after i removed it with CCLEANER) once it was removed. There's also a loss of a ton of gaming titles from Steam. I love it when people call Windows "spy-ware" when, most of the time, all that "spying" comes from all the places they've been on the internet and things that have been downloaded (from the browser) that they didn't even know was there.
Thank You! I'll switch to Linux when time permits, Win7 will die soon and Win10 seems like a pile of spy-ware.
Kind Regards ; )
Thanks Chris for a great series, really enjoyed it, for an 'old fart', (69), sick of Windows crap, very informative and helpful!
I'm just about to set up Mint.
I'm sure many more will be switching after yesterday's Microsoft User Agreement Update email which is mandatory for you to accept at the end of August, or have your account deleted.
I wonder why more new laptops are not setup with Linux to as a start.
First of all not to sound like a dick but dude if you haven't noticed Microsoft already knows and is moving to Linux… So what they will mostly do if you are up to date they will have a management console and run the back end stuff on Linux. AD and other stuff will be migrated. So for all the admins this is the best time to learn Linux cause if they don't well they will have to eventually lol. Well about what Linus said is do what ever suits you rather then going all over. The package manager is the key!! What ever floats your boat bro lol go with it!!!
Love this series. Appreciate the learning tutorials, Never even thought about Arch, but now the curiosity has set in.. Ill be tuned in..
Congratulations from the UK … great vid.
I started the Windows-Linux move nearly 20 years ago now … firstly it was the ill-fated Lindows (Linspire) PCLinuxOS then onto Ubuntu, Fedora and my current distro, the marvellous Arch-based Antergos, which takes all the install hassle out of a pure Arch system. I haven't mentioned the various many other flavours I tried in between but discarded for various reasons.
In that time Desktop Linux has improved beyond all recognition. I remember jumping off my stool with joy when I finally managed to access the internet with a USB modem which I had to purchase anew as my then current one was Linux-incompatible. Ethernet and wi-fi has changed all that and most things now work straight out-of-the-box.
You are dead right about Kdenlive, in fact I was only just using it before I started to watch your video and Avidemux is another 'must have' for video editors whilst Audacity is superb for audio conversion and manipulation.
Go back to Windows ? … no way! … though I do still keep a copy of Windows 10 on a Virtualbox VM as there are still TV/Internet companies which insist on the user running Windows for Desktop viewing.
However, I would never advise older folk to make the switch .. let's face it, that can be a bit pointless at a certain age and unnecessarily baffling for them … but for young and middle-aged folk I say just 'go for it'. You'll never regret making the change to a much better and more satisfying computing experience.
Again, many thanks for providing such a fair and balanced view of the many pros and few cons of fleeing from Windows to Linux … and always remember, folks … Linux is FREE!
First positive: totally agree
Best thing ever
hee, you need to check out fusion form blackmagic and natron. that are after effects alternatives. natron is foss
davinci resolve from black magic for adobe premiere.
Blender 3D 2.80 for 3D Modeling and animation.
frigma for UI design.
I think one of the reasons why there's not a lot of effort put into getting things working in wine is because there's so much software available for Linux. Most people just decide to go with another application or boot into Windows if they absolutely must have a particular app. I personally see things like learning how to do good image editing in Gimp to be a good skill to have. Once you learn how to do that you won't have to pay for licensing for image editing software on Linux or Windows ever again. You have to put in effort up front but you wind up setting yourself free in the long run.
Try Arcolinux, distribution based on arc linux. for me it is go to linux distribution.
