This goes over the basic setup of a new Synology 1019+ I have. I am going over the initial setup, folder sharing to our LAN, and setting our Static IP.

  1. it is not a fast set up for mac users that do not know netowrking. I am on the brink of returning and sticking to my wired RAID for that reason. Very disappointing. But your video is pretty good. Much better than Synology tutorials.

  2. Static IP??? Where did you do this? I just see link aggregation. How on earth do you have Patreon supporters? You don't even have time markers in your videos. amateur stuff. I'll have to search for a better made static IP vid.

  3. is there a way to setup the quickconnect if i have a proxy server? i can install the package in the package center which mean i got the internet access but somehow i'm not able to connect using the quickconnect function. anyone got a clue/solution to this?

  4. I beg of you. Install some type of Mail Server on Synology and show us how you did it. Not mail client (that's easy) but (actually) send & receive your mail from some type of the Synology's mail application. No one has good videos on that. Yeah, install MailPlus Server and REALLY, REALLY use it. I would buy a Synology if I could have it just for that … Here is link …

  5. I absolutely love how Synology offers their own self-hosted version of cloud services. I switched to Synology Drive when Dropbox set a device limit, and I switched to DS Note when Evernote set a device limit. They have Linux versions of the desktop software, as well as mobile. You can also replicate the whole Google Office suite. I used to have a monster 12 x 3TB FreeNAS build, downsized to a used Syno 416 Play, and now I don't need a NAS at all but I run the Syno off a single SSD just for the services. They are a little pricey but totally worth it.

  6. I have an older one of these, but love it. I actually a few days ago just setup port forwarding so I can remote into my server, its perfect. Also still just as fast outside as it is inside my house.

  7. I never install the app (yet another bloat) to find a DHCP enabled device on a private network. Access your (internet) router and find the device in the DHCP lease allocation table. Optional mark that device as an static entry i.e. always assign that device the same IPv4/IPv6 address. Saves one from setting up a local DNS/smb master/whatnot. Only drawback is the dependency on the ISP router and trust. Looking forward for the next setuo i.e. iSCSI.

  8. Personally I'd rather use a FreeNAS box. Synology has propritary hardware and I've heard they had issues a year or so ago. Guess we'll find out in a year or so. 😉

  9. Timing couldn't be better! Only this morning I was starting to look into remote connection of my 2-bay Synology from my Arch machine! Looking forward to the next videos. Can you include remote connection from an outside network options other than Quick Connect?

  10. Synology uses a proprietary OS, that's why I preferred to use something else (open source), even I never heard of privacy/spying issues, but still, I never trust proprietary software.

  11. I bought a DS1010+ back in 2010, put 5 Samsung EcoGreen F4 2TB drives in it and it's STILL running strong today…no HDD errors or anything. It's been used as a home security camera recording station for the last almost 4 years….so, lots of HDD activity. I am SOLD on Synology products! I'm amazed the HDD's have held up for almost 9 years now too! Oh…yeah, I do back it all up too…so if it goes tata's up I'm covered. I'm just waiting for an excuse to upgrade! 🙂 Don't forget you can also add an additional 5 drives with the expansion bay (https://amzn.to/2Z09vSp). What's also nice is the support for Virtualization and extra services such as setting up your own mail server (no more Google snooping!) Love Synology!

  12. QUESTION: I know this is bassackward compared to what you did today.
How can I access movies & music stored on a Win7 box on my network? Evidently my google-fu was weak when it came to locating a solution to this problem.
Admittedly, I'm a total Linux noob. I have 2 old Core2Duo laptops that I've installed Mint on (since Win7 didn't run smoothly given RAM limitations).
    Thanks in advance!
