Today we’re tagging Dexter calves. Calves are experts at getting into trouble, and sometimes they lose their ear tags. We also take a look a curious problem with the winter pen bedding pack, and discuss “cowpen geology.â€

Hi Pete, how will you do this now that you've changed barns?
HI there Pete. I'm so glad you didn't get ear tagged. Mine would read 6301. What would yours read?
Fun with winter cattle maintenance.
Hey Pete, quick question…if the tags tore off, how do you know their sequence when retagging them? How can you tell if they are the 1st 2nd or 3rd calf that year if the tag is no longer there? Just curious. Cheers.

Does the right or left ear have any significants?
What ya got there is a poo mogul field.
What's the name of the marker?
Are you originally from Minnesota? I saw a Gophers T-shirt in a previous video.
Be 43-44 years ago, worked in small sawmill, boss raised Charolais beef .
In fall early November we take a Saturday n round up all that years calfs.
For banding or crimping.
Had a one sided stall with posts.
Run calfs in there & 3 of us would force calf up against the wall & about 4' off ground were three exposed beams we (3) of us young men whom worked in the mill & fairly strong would reach over n grab beams n body slam calfs against wall.
One of owners sons either band or crimp Bulls to create steers.
Thing was calfs could of been born in April/may or last month.
Was a all morning/day job depending on herd size that year.
The three of the "holders" had to work fast and as a team especially on larger ones.
Was a real work out for sure.
We were young Strong & was in need of money.
The day pay was 20-40$ & in 77 was a lot of money.
Was a bit of fun cause you bust n tease each other some, but the team work was great, lot of the guys we played sports with in high school.
At the end of the day you were tired, had some cash in your pocket, but satisfied of a day of good work accomplished.
Hmm maybe why spines full of Mr. Arthritis now.
Times were good then.
Loving this channel Pete, brings so many good memories up.

I use those tag markers on spin on oil filters alot easier to see at a glance what tractor needs an oil change
Is it possible to supplement the waste on the floor with rock salt? It could lower the freezing point and you could possibly clear it out, or maybe it would keep the sludge soft so it would clump so bad…?
He's a lefty.
Is there a reason your using the headgate backwards? There's a slot & loop for doing a chain halter on the other side so they can't toss their head around once caught.
Im subscribing because I’m trying to start a farm, and your videos are so far some of the best information there is.
Sweet!!
You have a way to simplify the subjects, even for a flintstone like me..:) thank you!!
Pete, your videos are excellent! I am learning a lot and enjoying watching them. I hope more people will subscribe to your channel.
Excellent video thank you 🙂
I really appreciate your detailed description of what you are doing! I just got into cattle (2 mini jerseys, bcs couldn't find Dexter's near me in Tallahassee, FL). I am learning as I go, I see I need a headgate, lol
We used to call those hay/manure grooves the petrified forest.
