In this video Josh was getting ready to install some OEM rear calipers on this ’17 GMC Terrain. They way they plug off these rear calipers it could be easy to miss the plug and install the brake hose 🙄 Good thing we saw it first 😅

  1. Kind of interesting really. You look in OE service info and nothing in there about it but Josh did mention that the new OE caliper did have fluid in it. Perhaps it is some sort of QC testing and then they seal it off when finished?

    Honestly, that looks like a piece of "revengeneering" where a disgruntled engineer sneaks in a more costly material (metal) into a design that is meant to literally cause a problem.

  3. Oh boy ,that could have ended very badly. Great call there eagle eyes rt. on prevented a lot of problems. How much do you think the General spends on mass production of S.steel grub screws? Even if it is aluminum still must be massive cost. Again, great save man!

  4. My Dad getting 2013 GMC terrain it has 170.000 km on it but the engine was rebuilt 87.000 km. Hope it last a year or so. Told my dad not to touch it but it was his brother and he passed away.

  5. Yeah that was just plain stupid I've never seen one of those kind its always bin a plastic threaded cap.i would have definitely missed that and probably screwed myself when I went to screw in the brake hose

  6. Spend the extra 10 cents on a metal plug but don't put a dab of orange paint on it…or just make the plug longer so it extends out from the sealing surface, but that would be 11 cents.

  7. I bet you would have found no pressure when bleeding. then you would have loosened the banjo bolt and found pressure there and then said theirs your problem lady theirs a plug in your caliper.

  8. I would likely have not caught that the easy way. I wonder if that engineered plug cost less than the plastic insert ? Perhaps the little bastard I’d greener or something?

  9. what a novel idea, to actually get calipers, plastic and packaging that's not fully soaked in leaked brake fluid! half the time the plastic plugs are floating around inside the bag and fluid everywhere. it's a mess to clean and I'm sure that keeps the assembly line clean and if they do some coating spray/cleaning after assembly it keeps it out of the caliper.

  10. Quite common to see thes where I live (europe) often these are found on calipers that have a core charge and the idea is that you put the threaded plug on the old caliper so it doesn't leak break fluid everywhere

  11. Eric I watched one of your old video and thought I would give you a tip for electrical wires, when you need a small roll of electrical tape get a 8mm socket rap the tape round the socket and then it will fit in small areas. It works everytime and fits in tight areas.

  12. Fantastic catch. A question that recently came to mind is knowing how manufacturers are always trying to save money, why did Ford put six lug wheels on the Rangers? Five seemed to work fine on the 150's!

  13. You sure that wasn't just a NAPA stocking issue where someone else may have returned it as being defective (and simply got put back into good stock)? 🤔
    Seeing that kinda makes me want to check out whatever fluid might be in it too. (It might not be brake fluid.) 😳

    … I think I'd keep returning units like that until I got a good one that worked out of the box (or off the shelf).

    Have you done a video on how to do the rear brakes on these types of vehicles with electronic park brakes on how to put them in to service mode etc?

  15. Brake engineer or supplier? I've seen suppliers change up "aftermarket" things like that ALL THE TIME without consulting the Customer Service Divisions…ALL THE TIME.

    I know you're not a 'fan' of the engineers, but having been one a LONG time ago, I can tell you…99% of the crap you see? You can thank a non-engineer for. Studio, Leadership, Finance, Purchasing, Suppliers, NHTSA, UNIONS, EPA, etc. the list goes on. I'm surprised the car companies can even get something out the door half the time.
