Drawing on extensive personal and local footage, “The Virus That Shook the World” tells the story of people across the globe who have experienced the pandemic and its consequences in different ways — from a food blogger in Wuhan, China; to a filmmaker in a remote Indigenous village in Brazil; to a musician and puppeteer in Delhi, India.

From series director James Bluemel and series producer Alice Henley, the two-part special shows how the impacts of the disease that has now killed more than 3 million people have overlapped and differed across cultures, races, faiths and privilege; how various governments have responded; and how the pandemic has exposed existing inequities and social problems.

  1. Lost my father in 2020 from liver disease. It was truly hard because I never got to say goodbye, one person at a time to visit for one hour. So sorry for all the lives lost !! Horrific

  2. Covid Mortality Rates had more to do with gathering Information on the Natural Course of an Epidemic than the Deaths themselves in my Opinion and will be validate in Future History Books. Mask or No Mask. Dense Living Quarters or not. Prior Health Conditions/Health Care or not. (While not admitted too, Smokers, Homeless, Non-Seasonal/Yearly Vaccination Receivers suffered less under the Virus. Those on Respirators conditions worsened due to extend use of Respirators and not Covid itself. Wars are what typically Cull Growing Populations, if at Peace, a Pandemic takes the place in Population Control!

  3. The totally unnecessary and dire consequences were mandated by the foolish and power hungry so-called world leaders (bull-shitters). Covid didn't screw up the world, politicians did!!!!! So many sheeple allowed themselves to be controlled — then to be told to take that damn JAB!! I wasn't one of them. I didn't stay indoors. I did what I wanted to do. I never took that damn JAB either. So sad that most of the world's citizens allowed control – no weddings, no funerals, no dancing, no embraces for our dying, no kisses to the tears of our family members dying in the hospitals…..😢😢😢 16:29

  4. I remember when I started paying attention to what was happening in Wuhan. It was a combination of doctors getting sick and the government trying to silence their dying words that told me this wasn’t just going to be a local problem over there!

When it hit New York, and an entire family was on the news, I called members of my family and said, “This is going to get bad. Stock up and try to be careful!” I then looked around my home and tried to see if we had everything we needed! But how can you know what “bad” really is unless you have personally experienced it? Who knew that things we took for granted could disappear in an instant?

After all the things we experienced back in 2020-2022 we remember none of it. I fear for when it happens again. 😢

  5. Why is there no COVID-19 in Africa? Because Africa is poor, African people can't afford to help the government develop the pharmaceutical industry. Look at the ranking of the number of deaths, and then look at their pharmaceutical industry. Who is the president during the COVID-19 pandemic! The outbreak of COVID-19 is a conspiracy to destroy mankind. It is a part of Disney's plot. 🇺🇸🇨🇳🇬🇧🇫🇷🇨🇦🇪🇺🇯🇵🇰🇷🇹🇼🇭🇰 The government jointly planned the whole crime, which is aimed at the development of the pharmaceutical industry for all mankind!

  8. I was infected, and managed to Survive, in quarantine, at 70 YEARS OLD, that year, Still my metabolism is greatly diminished, GOD'S grace ,I Believe ,Sustains Me Continuously ❤❤❤❤ John Barnett revisited 6:27 ❤ thanks for these memories ❤

  9. At my work in January my company had yet to initiate travel bands. We have had bans in the past, but this was different…..a week after I had contacted our flight surgeon, international travel was banned……..but we were too late….

  10. Started a new job transporting for the local county hospital late February 2020 a week later every thing shut down.spent the rest of the year running to all our test sites picking up hundreds of Covid tests samples to deliver to the lab 🧪 for testing while most people were running from it i was running to it. Also when I got to the hospital I had to go around the refrigerator trailer, sitting outside the medical examiner for all the extra bodies from people dying.

  11. I think the response of china in the later stages of the pandemic is something to learn from, the speed with which they built hospitals in mere weeks using prefabricated hospital units, the code tracking system, the lockdowns were all implemented and effective.

  12. I'm in the US and when it happened, I guess I was ready. I had worked in animal sheltering for 20 years, so contagion, virus incubation and quarantine periods were nothing new to me. Treating parvo puppies was my job. You should pray that virulent calicivirus never mutates.

  13. Trump's lies and deceit made so many poeple not follow lock down laws. Trump's ego and arrogance killed over 1 million lives. His lack of leadership caused this pandemic so much worse than it could have been.

  14. Looking back now, from being January 2025 right now, covid isn't talked about "front and center" like it was. They say its still around but nothing like back then. Theres still controversy. Theres still divide. Now its more noticeable and difficult to ignore.
The way of life prior to all that will never return. Those carefree days won't ever come back.

  15. Trump was right in restricting flights from China, but noooooo. That’s racist. During this time period, I worked in a snack food plant and we were deemed essential workers since we supplied grocery stores. We were forced to work 12 hr days running 24 hrs six days a week for what seemed like eternity. During the first 18 months, we were dropping like flies and Covid was running through the plant among the workers due to the unavoidable close working conditions. The office people were allowed to work from home. We were running so thin on production workers that we weren’t meeting production goals and the mention of working 7 days every other week caused a work stoppage among the Union workers in protest. I myself came down with Covid about a year in and was out for two weeks. Thankfully none of us died and only a few got the long Covid. Most of us recovered .

  18. I recall watching this documentary when it first came out. I don’t know why, but it reminded me of reading “And the Bad Played On” and the different documentaries regarding the early years of the AIDS epidemic in the USA and around the world. There was life “before” and “after”.

How unfortunate that this seems to be the same sediment within the medical community. Same with Ebola. What is so concerning is with our ability to move quickly about the globe, illnesses such as h as Ebola, COVID, flu, etc…can and will continue at a rapid pace.

  19. It angers me that wuhan has this young couple walking around when other apartments are sealed up and they have the nerve to down talk other countries for not locking down early enough when she either didn’t know or is ignoring the fact that the reason for the wide spread outside of wuhan is because their own government did not lock down when they should have but instead allowed new years celebrations to happen and traveling to happen in the beginning so she’s extremely naive and misled by her own government
