Tight Shifting Tricks and How I Got Into Tractor Restoration | Farmall 856 Restoration Episode 17

It’s time to assemble the shifters and shift linkages on the Farmall 856, and I have a few tricks for eliminating slop, for a nice tight feel when shifting the tractor. I also spend some time talking about how I got into restoring old tractors, and some tips for those wishing to do the same.

  1. Sure helped me, Pete! I work on stationary antique hit-and-miss engines. I've thought about trying a smaller tractor, like an F-12 / F-14. I have limited shop space, but you've got me thinking about trying it. If you can do a muscle tractor like the *56 in your small-ish space, Perhaps I can do a smaller and simpler one. By the way, on my bookshelf is a signed copy of _Old Tractors and the Men Who Love Them, by Roger Welsch! He passed away in 2022, but I remember him well–he was superb at expressing the mysterious connection of people who feel that their tractors are sentient characters! Best Regards~~Jeff from CT.

  2. I enjoyed your talk on how you got started on tractor restoration. Had / have the same bug BUT no room to do it. Many years ago I was going to buy a bunch of German Buntz tractors, but had no room for them. Now just buy small machine tools and get them working and upgraded.

  3. Pete, it I ever make it over your way, which considering the frailty of my bladder, seems unlikely, I'll stand the the tab at the Crossroads Bar and Grill, which is just down the road from you. and we could put the world to rights!

  4. I’ve been watching you for years and your knowledge of putting these tractors back together. Another thing is all these parts have to be manufactured and the idea of a group of people figuring out how to make and have everything make things work.

  5. Peet, I am looking at a tractor 1960 's Farmall 560 IH Diesel 2600 hrs It runs, has a hydrualic buckit lift and 3 point hitch as some type of mower. and it runs. What do you think?

    $1,800

  6. Agree with you Pete , one of the most overcast , darkest , cloudy winters l can remember in my life . Usually l can always remember when Lake Erie freezes over and everyone starts ice fishing , we usually get sun . Not happening !

  7. I love the red . It looks like a puzzle to me ! I've never done anything like this , I am learning to change my bike tires . I am a women and older . I love what you do and wish I could do this .
    Thankyou for sharing.
    P s . Love the old tractors🚜🚜🚜

  8. Hi Pete, wanted to get your thoughts on buying a new radiator vs having the old one repaired. Some of the forums say the new ones aren't very good. What's your thoughts on the quality of the new radiators?
    Thanks.

  11. truly mechanical manual transmission , today it's mostly internal , imagine how many times they tried before they built one that worked making each casting , each connection rod , matting each to the next , all for multi speed multi power too the wheels , seeing the restorations like this ,shows how far we come ,like you said ,, the internet has made this a search and click of a key word, in the past you had to go see a farmer or farm store dealer in hope he could teach you how too ,🥸🤓,Canada

  12. I recently purchased my first antique tractor, 1954 allis chalmers wd45
Been having fun with it can’t wait to paint it as whether permits here in Michigan 👍
My great used to take me to the tractor shows 40 years ago, he had an F12 farmall

  13. I just turned 30 and bought a 806 to restore I’ve never messed with tractors much though I’ve always been around heavy equipment and semi trucks I just want to say I do appreciate these videos it helps people like me along the way sure we can read the manuals but along the way you just run into hiccups like your mcv rebuild with the wood clamp to put the plug back in I would’ve struggled forever without seeing you do that so thanks again and keep it going

  14. Hi Pete, love your videos, just purchased 766. needs a little love and fixing, few oil leaks. I like how you file the shoulder on those bolts to make a tighter fit. I need to do the same as you have on your linkage , shifting and brake. Thanks for all your ideas and explanations. Pete from Arcade👍👍

  15. Really enjoyed how you explain things that us people that are mechanically inclined understand and the patience that we all need in this get it done world love hearing you explain things we understand keep the videos coming have a good day Pete.
