This is a 2002 Pontiac Firebird with the GM 3.8l 3800 Series II Engine. This vehicle came in with an large oil leak on the engine and an oily substance in the radiator. The antifreeze was mixing with engine oil. The problem is common with this series of engine. The lower intake manifold gaskets deteriorate and case coolant to leak into the engine oil, oil is also allowed to contaminate the cooling system resulting in the fouled coolant and soft radiator hoses. This is multi part repair and is somewhat difficult in this particular car due the firewall and wiper cowl location. We will remove the intake plenum and lower manifold valve covers, and the engine accessories such as alternator, belt, and the tensioner. In this case the belt tensioner also has a heater core bypass built into it so there is engine coolant in the belt tensioner as well. Part one will be the teardown, part two will be engine assembly and the final part will miscellaneous assembly, fluids, cleaning and final inspection. This video is part two of this series. As mentioned in the video this vehicle was featured before due to catastrophic A/C system failure. See links below for all past A/C videos.

  1. just subbed , i see you rarely respond to comments but i just want to say i will be doing the same tear down and replacements on my 2001 camaro very well from watching your videos , dont got much tools but this kobalt tool box kit but it shall do the job 🙏🏽

  2. I could never be able to do one of these at my age and resources…yes. i am "old school Firebird" up to the mid-80s 6.6L V-8s…but now just enjoy your 42min segments…I b 75y.o. on 22nd this month(Sunday) 2024…just get sleepy tired wuth your unique presentations

  3. Regarding the music. Was Wife Unit playing Minecraft in the background, LOL?!?!? The music reminded me of the tens of thousands of hours of my kids playing that game!!!

  4. For anyone curious, the blue end gaskets (12:20) are for early series III engines only. Mainly 1995 and 1996; the design was improved for 97 and onward with the locating pin style.

  5. Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  6. I'm surprised at the amount of abuse and reference to Bob Ross that you are taking for your choice of fill-in music. I'll take this over any of that insane raging metal or rap music that others use and has ruined videos for me. For a good laugh you should start your next video with paint brushes and an easel.

  7. I know on the last 3.8L that you fixed with the same problem you definitely forgot to put thread sealant on the lower intake bolts because I have the same motor. Although this motor is a different generation from the last one you did, I'm pretty sure several of these LI bolts also pass through the coolant jackets, hence the need to apply special high temp thread sealant to the bolts. This is the most critical part of doing this job. Not sealing those threads can mean the coolant, and or oil, will go right through those threads and will result in the same problem reoccurring not too far in the future. Blue Loctite is not considered to be anywhere near acceptable in the event anyone thinks that's all that needs to be used. GM sells the "official" sealant for a premium cost, but Permatex has the equivalent product as a cross reference. You pointed out the need to change the valve cover gaskets due to the work it takes to do the job and then skipped the most critical part of this repair. Considering that several other people besides myself also made mention about how critical the sealant is to this job I was hoping you would have checked the procedure to verify this point. I guess considering the amount of work it would take to fix the last mistake, you decided you'd just wait and see if it leaks and deal with it then. I think it's just too important to the success of the job for me to not inform others about this point.

  8. You got any Upgraded kit suggestions or part numbers for all the gaskets and intake manifold?
I believe at one point GM upgraded it to prevent it from melting

  9. I enjoyed the background music. Didn't realize what was different then realized it was the relaxing, almost subliminal music. Helped me concentrate on your presentation and kept the days events at bay. Thanks for sharing.
