  1. I still say I want to be as good a mechanic as Mickey Mouse. He can put a pile of parts under the hood with a shovel, shut the hood and start the engine. That's a fantastic mechanic.

  2. Ford should have not only stayed with ZF but they should have required them to put a drain plug. This no dipstick nonsense is ridiculous. It didn’t hurt before so no reason not to incorporate one now. Why make service requirements if the owner can’t do the service or the service isn’t unnecessarily over complicated for a shop to do. I’m pleased to see Ray actually doing the correct method. I never saw the use of when there is a changeable filter, only flushing or replacing just the filter but not all the fluid in the system. Oh the days when there was a plug on the torque converter. Non the less the correct procedure is to drop the pan, replace the old fluid with new fluid via a pump and then check the proper level while the transmission is at the normal operating temperature. Also note these transmissions have a thermostat that needs to reach the proper operating temperature before fluid can flow unrestricted throughout the system. Also these low viscosity fluids expand tremendously when hot so checking the system often is recommend as to not overfill. Not all transmissions come with a vent tube. I’d do this service every 30-50k miles if you’re towing or using your vehicle in very hot climates and in stop and go traffic often. Doesn’t hurt to change the fluid early. I normally do it at 60k miles under normal mostly highway conditions in a four season climate. Just remember every other transfer case fluid exchange, which is at 30k miles or earlier if under those severe conditions. Lastly is if you’re not mechanically inclined or have the ability to do this service yourself, find a reputable mechanic like Ray is, too many willfully obtuse mechanics out there. I once paid $600 for this exact same service on a 10R80 transmission and the idiot who did the service overfilled the system and it wasn’t noticed until after few days, luckily it had a vent tube and was traced easily by a noticeable leak which looked like a gasket leak 😮

  3. Hey Ray Ray, I think you have ADHD like I do I can’t see this in your video or maybe outside of need to put the pot pipe down one of the two or both oh my

  4. Ray ray do you have one of those solvent booths you know where you clean parts enough recyclable fluids? Why are you not using that instead of those expensive cameras? I know you got the tank cause I seem to use it what’s up with that Mr. Ray

  5. You know I don’t understand why they don’t put a drain plug in the oil pan with the transmission just like to do that oil pan for the engine makes it so much easier. Luckily my Ford F250 super duty 2000 year has that that I also found that the damn transmission is the same one they put in the 1 ton trucks. My camper on the truck weighs more than the truck itself I think but it has that drain plug in the bottom of my damn makes it so much easier.

  6. Isnt it bad to change the transmission fluid? I recently bought a 2012 ford f150 with 165k miles on it. Should I change the transmission fluid and filter on it or leave it alone as I dont know the history if it was ever changed.

  7. my 2008 mustang had the 5 speed auto with no dipstick and a stupid adapter was needed to fill through the hole in the bottom of the pan! STUPID engineering. They couldve done this way (fill hole on top) or gave us a dispstick (so we could check fluid). DUMB DUMB DUMB

  8. I actually spend hours watching these videos I love them I would love to work with him he's one of the best Mechanic's I've ever seen in my life keep up the good work there sir

  9. How did you know which way the fluid flow was at the trans cooler? It looked like the quick connect fittings were the same so could you explain that to us in laymans terms?

  10. Time for a Mighty Vac for fluid extraction! Personally I use a large glass container with a vacuum pump. Keep up the great work Ray!

  11. Ever watched a 4×4 fall off a lift at full height? I HAVE!

storytime: Somewhere around 97/98' I was in college auto school shop… One of the instructors was prepping (I think) a Toyota 4-Runner, for the junk yard… he was also the Toyota dealer certified instructor…

He's cutting the rear axel off with the hot-wench 😉… One side comes loose, the axel bounces a bit, as does the truck…
He moves to the other side of axel and cuts it off…

The axel falls to the floor, the tires make it bounce a bit…
At the same time, all the weight of the engine changes the center of TRUCK-GRAVITY 🤷 and the truck just tips forward right off the lift…

It was an amazing and fun thing to watch⌚😲 🤯🙀

  12. I worked in my father's garage from the '60's until the late '70's.
For the life of me, I could never understand why there was never a drain plug on the transmission pan. What a filthy mess every fluid change.

When Saturn cars came out, I went to one of their showrooms where they had a car on display and an engine cut in half.
I noticed the drain plug on the trans and a screw on filter! I Said, "FINALLY"!
I guess other cars may have that now, but I've never com across another one.

Love your videos. Keep up the good work.

  13. How much brake clean do you use? Have you ever thought about buying it by the drum and getting a reusable canister that can be pressurized by your compressor? I mean even a 5 gallon can of break cleaner gives you 46/ 14oz cans of the brake cleaner and using a reusable compressable sprayer could keep you from going through so many cans to throw away. I know you get a shop owner discount so what would cost me $140 for a 5 gallon can could cost you half of that and a one time buy reusable spray can would cost you $40. Just trying to save you some money if that can even be done. I'm sure I'll get shit on for even saying it but, whatever. I just saw another YouTube Channel, I think it was @autotechmike but I'm not sure and thought of you.

  14. Cool I like the fluid exchange machine , and hopefully you make the brake fluid exchange video 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

  15. FYI Dorman makes a pan with a drain bolt. Ive had one on for the past 40,000. Works great. I replaced the transmission oil filter and then installed the pan with the magnets.

  16. Correct me if I'm wrong here. Didn't Ray say he would use a transmission cleaner? Did I miss the cleaner being added and then excange the ATF fluid?

  17. Yo ray u didn't think of this but that trans is over full you didnt take account of the two or three cans of brake kleen that mixed into that trans oil so sbout 3/4 of a quart over you are i can bet. Unless u know this n just didn't say but yeah alot of people donit that way which is cool but if your using solvents you need to ise separate pans if your using the oil to gauge how much to put back. Being over that little normally dont hurt nothing but often will vent a little bit of oil out the vent tube.

  18. That transmission has a thermal bypass valve that will not open until the fluid reaches 187 degrees. If you just ram fluid into it , it will not open and new fluid will just circulate thru trans cooler. As soon as that new room temperature fluid hits thermal bypass valve it will close intolerable fluid reaches 187 degrees again. This job of replacing all the fluid takes a long time.

  19. I have mixed emotions about the order of operations, I'd rather have a filter that hasn't been exposed to a cleaning agent and anything dislodged from the system, You're using standards-compliant trans fluid to top it off. Either way, 70K is nothing, that fluid looked great coming out, so nothing to worry about. Bet that bag of wine was pretty expensive.

  20. Great video again, Ray. Having watched the follow-on video where this truck came back for brakes, I have a question. In the second video you said you added conditioner to the AT fluid. What does that conditioner do? You speak very highly of BG transmission fluid (won't argue that, I'm sure it's top shelf), and this truck had a 100% fluid exchange. The vehicle doesn't seem under-maintained, so I am curious why an experienced pro like you uses an additive. This is a genuine question, not argumentative, since I respect your expertise.

  21. And the fact that such moral questions do not have a direct correct alternative, there are arguments for both, but the individual's perception changes it all. And you have a phrase that says something quite like this

  22. Am I the only one bothered by the fact that he didn't follow star pattern taking off or replacing the pan? Idk if that actually makes a difference but I've always been told that you should follow star because it will evenly compress and prevent leaking? Or maybe that only applies to lug nuts and oil pans? I've only ever worked on my own vehicles so not much experience
