Torch
That large washer is not thrust it’s a oilslinger the small paper thin washer should be replaced only with a replace German washer from CSP in Germany
Middle aged man here with my tip of the day ! I’ve been using an electric heat gun with a temperature gauge and a laser thermometer for bearings and aluminum cases on building motorcycle engines,,,,,,NEVER EVER USE A TORCH ON A VW case or housing like this .They are manly magnesium and it will catch fire and it can’t be stopped ,,,,burns under water if you’re not aware,,,,,so you will burn down your house . Buddy burned his friend’s house with a welder on a VW van . All they could do was pull it it outside while still on fire with a tow rope and a 4×4. 1957 single cab with 15 k all original in the house ! Peace on earth and 6 volt air cooled engines .
Found my '58 bus in the woods after it'd been sleeping there for 45 years, changed out the crashbox and reduction box gear oil and added some Liqui Moly MoS2 Anti-Friction For Gears, and its been running great. Nice and quiet, amazing stuff. But guess maybe its about time to change out those 66 year old bearings and seals, huh. Cheers.
Wish I'd watched this two days ago. 😅
Great video and thanks for taking the time show. Question right at 8:24 you were pulling the case off it got stuck, Then boom it was off. How did you do that please,
Boy Mustie, That old Crusty sure sounds good!
I once saw a VW bug in CA that could be driven in either direction . Had an engine in both ends ( kind of cute) now I know how it was reversed so you could drive it backward one transmision had the gear reduction the other didnt !!!
Good job
great video
I’ve made a sign for you and liked to mail it to you. You probably don’t what to give your address on this site so how can I get it. Maybe give me your shops address.
Was so awesome to see Crusty at Larz Anderson while visiting family and friends a couple weeks ago. And got to meet a friend of yours @preservationautowerks He was so friendly and gracious letting us roam around his beautiful shop and collection. Sure was hoping you'd stop by. Never miss a video. ⤠from SC
I actually reached for the vice grips to try 'n help out at 17:40, LOL.
For those seeing this. Make sure you torque the drums on BEFORE you add the fluid. That O-ring needs to be compressed first.
Classic Volkswagen
Thank you for doing and filming this. I was afraid the trans had to come out. Love you vids!
Great video, loved it.
Everytime you use a channel lock on those bearings, I cringe! ☹ï¸
AHHaaa the memories– loved the episode Only suggestion would be to install the upper outer bearing with a washer or tube with that bolt as a pusher. Might see ya at the next BBB Havasu.
Never knew those VWs had a gear reduction like that. Very cool design.
THE LAST TIME I HELD THE VICEGRIPS FOR YOU,YOU HIT MY THUMB!
