This video goes over where Linux desktop is doing better than Windows and Mac. I will cover two topics that has seen explosive growth this past year and is an entry point into Linux desktop. Gaming and Refurbished PCs.

After installing KDE Plasma desktop and dumping all GTK applications, my debian workstation does everything better than windows or mac
Nothing can really match the speed of windows right now thou. I have a 144Hz monitor and a monster gpu, and moving windows around, resizing and animations are butter smooth on Windows, in most Linux distros, simply moving windows around has stutter to it. Wonder why that is.
Gaming industry is huge. Serious financial proposals will be needed in order for developers to come to linux
OK, item #3: Noise level. Windows is noisy, with crapware, security warnings, and all kinds of mindless messages. Linux doesn't do that, and gives a much more undisturbed computing experience.
Civilization is awesome on Linux 🙂
Issue with gaming is that it's kinda distro sensitive. For me – i have even problems with "native" ports. I have games that straight up doesnt even work. Some that doesnt support amd hardware and have visual artifacting during gameplay. Also i have this thing for example: xcom 2 and borderlands 2, two games which i rly like. on linux mint i could play them both, however i would get garbage performance on xcom 2. meanwhile on manjaro xcom 2 would run much better, but i couldnt get borderlands 2 to even run. It's like i heard one time – all the options and choices linux offers is it's greatest strength and it's biggest weakness at the same time. Despite what linux people might bitch about windows, one reason why it runs strong is – its one platform, which lets it deliver constant performance and experiance without headaches.
Several years ago I read in Linux Jurnal magazine, that someone got the Linux 2.0 kernel to run the 2nd generation Commodore 64! It couldn't do much but we can sove it in Microsofts and say "let's see windows do that"!
I already banned Windows from my HD. Been using Kubuntu for years and haven't looked back except to see how self-destructive Windows gets. Asura seems way to invasive I don't think I will allow Asura in my apartment. using Kubuntu 19.10 now. I can't wait for Ubuntu 20.04 and flavors to come out. I read it's going to have the INVIDIA driver on it and a special installer! Canicol must have worked something big with NVIDIA. You should do a picie on Ubuntu 20.04 20.04 is in development now so don't install it as your regular system. I don't know what its state is so you might hose your data. WARNING: newbies should NEVER use a development version of Linux.
Linux: the OS for those who have no Earthly use for a PC and should just get a Chromebook and call it good.
When you're passionate about something and let it make you blind. 😊
Old hardware can work great running Linux. I am using a 12 year old pc mini itx intel I5 with freenas as my home NAS. The setup was documented in your video series on freenas. It works great, easily accessible, and provides throughput at the highest possible rate you can get with GigE. I have several other 7 yr and older PC's running various Linux distro's – Debian, Arch, and Ubuntu. Plus another Raspberry Pi 4 running OpenMediaVault as another NAS just for me. Linux is definitely a useful OS. I still use W10 for Xfinity live channel streaming. Great insights and great content.
running linux since 07 ..used my linux laptop on deployment ..linux was bulletproof most of my military counterparts got hacked…linux has let me keep and refurbish older computers that Apple or windows just wont allow.
Many Thanks for contributing a strong Linux voice to the world! =)
Do a video about react OS
adobe for linux would be nice
I do not get why Linux videos make so much out of their position relative to Windows [10], if you like Linux great, I like it too but I don't need to constantly say "Linux is doing better now and catching Windows (or MacOS)" Either Linux is good or it is not and it is good so stop comparing with Windows and MacOS. Goodness, can't folk just be satisfied with their OS for what it is without all the angst evident in these comparisons?
You nailed it Chris, linux totally puts the fun back in computing!
Re. the refurbishing angle, my first Linux desktop install was on a 1st gen MacBook. One day about five years after purchase, Gmail web client told me I had to update my browser to log in. My browser wouldn't update because OSX was out of date. But Apple wanted ~$200 for the latest os update! After already having paid the Apple premium for the hardware! I was pissed; all I wanted to do was log into my Gmail. So I wiped the disk and installed Mint Xfce and it was like a whole new lease on life! The machine was ripping again! Never looked back.
Only problem is ms office for casual users… i mean office 2013 plus
I now have 7 recycled PC's that run some form of Linux OS on them. Sadly I'm still a complete newb to the Linux OS. Crazy amount to learn but I LOVE it. Limitless customization and infinite things to tinker with.
If only linux had good multi monitor support and fractional scaling…. I'm into new hardware just because I can, not really using it to the potential, but I really need good monitors
I don't care who likes windoze or who likes linux. I just care about what works for me, does what I need it to do, gives me freedom, and doesn't cost me an arm a leg and a finger. So since 2010 in search of such a thing I installed crunchbang linux (what a shock that was for a former microstuff user!), then tried mint, stayed with it since then, and now use mx-linux as my daily driver. Linux helped me wean myself off of microwsoff, & I haven't touched the stuff in 8 years.
A friend of mine is doing the switch. He heard from someone that you need to know how to code to use Linux. It took me some time to assure that's not the case.
I was a Windows XP and Windows 7 fanboi. Microsoft keeps dropping support for the systems I love. I'm now a Debian fanboi because support will never end.
Switched to linux mint over 10 years ago and never looked back. Every time I have to boot a windows computer I wince at how slow, buggy and unresponsive it is.
when they make it truly look professional, maybe they will have a shot, yes, I have tried many a distro, and no, I am not a linux pro, far from it, 8bit icons, nah, 8 bit "out of the box" games. nah, i will keep my Mac OS, and Windows 10 OS, and play around with linux when i am bored. Great channel though, keep up the linux push.. you are doing it right.
Mint 19.2 Rocks
whose watching this on ubuntu 19.04
pclINUXos for the last 7-8 years. Best move I ever made. Have a look at distrowatch.com for the different varieties.
The real enemy of Linux is not a windows,
That's the amount of distributions that make it difficult for the user to decide,
Especially that the software and drivers react differently in each distribution.
90% of all computer users, world-wide, use their computers for web surfing, web purchasing, on-line bill pay, word processing, photo galleries, music playlists. That is it. If you are using Windows or macOS for that, you are paying Microsoft and Apple to rip you off. Install Linux Mint and you will have all you need. Why don't people use Linux? Simple — "Can I install iTunes and connect my iPhone?" When you tell them no, they run away. Idiots. Even Apple is getting rid of iTunes and who cares about iPhones — they suck. I connect my Samsung Android to Linux Mint with no problem. I can drag and drop my photos and music to the S10 with no problem. Did that with an S7 too. Dump Microsoft and Apple products and get into the 21st Century.
HP Envy 17t laptop. 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD primary drive, 1TB platter data drive. Linux/Windows dual boot. Have NOT booted into Windows…ever. No reason to. Linux Mint 19.2 takes up 156GB of the SSD with Windows on the other 100GB. Installed Mint 19.2 Cinnamon the day I got the laptop. Install went smoothly with zero problems. Runs like a champ. Screw Microsoft and their spyware OS called Windows.
Heyy check out this video . A guy who says cheap people use Linux https://youtu.be/6nGskPedj6s
