In this video from the Drag Illustrated World Series of Pro Mod, things went completely off the rails during qualifying with Blue.

After struggling in testing, we hoped qualifying would go smoother… it didn’t.

During Q1 and Q2 the car went down the track but was way slower than it should have been, and we kept finding broken valve springs between rounds. After Q2 we decided to go all in — replacing every valve spring and swapping the transmission before the next round.

That’s when the real chaos started.

After Q3 we noticed something strange in the data. A compression test revealed two cylinders down nearly 100 psi, and once we pulled the head we discovered cracked sleeves in cylinders 4 and 6.

In the pits… during qualifying… at the biggest Pro Mod race in the world.

We replaced two sleeves and two pistons right there in the pits, got the engine back together, and made another pass. But it didn’t stop there…

Cylinder #4 lost compression again.
Head off. Oil pan off. Piston out. Rings replaced.

Then when we fired it up… #1 cylinder started pumping oil out the exhaust because of a pinched oil ring.

With only 35 minutes until the final qualifying round, we tore it back apart AGAIN.

Head off.
Oil pan off.
Piston out.
New piston and rings installed.

Then somehow… we got it back together and made the final pass.

Definitely not the kind of excitement we were hoping for, but it made for one of the most stressful qualifying days we’ve ever had.
