Replacing the distributor gear on some Ford distributors can be challenging. You may need to do this if you are running a roller camshaft and are installing a new distributor like I am in this video.

In this video I show you how to replace a Ford distributor gear on my small block 363. This procedure will work for any pressed on Ford distributor gear.

I hope this info saves you some time and money.

Thank you for watching!

  1. Drilling another hole when there's already a hole in the shaft just seems like a weak point. If there's enough pressure from the cam turning it to shread the gear my guess is there's enough force to break the shaft if it's weakened. I know it's difficult, but I'd at least attempt to line it up with the original hole before drilling a new one.

  2. Thanks, I've been sending my distributors to The Mustang Barn for them to put on my MSD steel gear on a stock Cardone distributor, so i can run a GT40P roller 5.0 with a points distributor. I think i'll try the next one myself, very good tutorial!

  3. I've got a distributor with a stacked double pinned gear at 90° from each other. Using heat now with a gear puller. Not really getting anymore towards removing it. About an 1/8th " in 12 hours

  4. Guess I better go buy some lotto tickets, just removed a Windsor gear from a Mallory distributor and installed a Cleveland gear on the Mallory unit in one try using same hole on dizzy shaft, just used a straight edge to align holes and my eyecrometer, and a deep socket to slowly tap gear on, lined up perfectly and Measured 4.005 just as specs call for. I really appreciate your videos and have learned from watching, glad to see you're back!

  5. Ford distributor gears are the harness gears to repent because Ford randomly just drove the hole for a pin and pinned it with no accuracy like other distributors specially like the Chevrolets with the pins were quickly installed at location of number one

  6. So why not use the same hole for the roll pin? And other then the mark on the gear "C" or "S" how can i tell which is steel and which is cast ? i got 2 old duraspark and not sure what gears are on.

  7. Friends here , I have seen soo many videos here about auto mobile mechanics and it's time I storm the mechanic school
Any support or recommendations to sponsoring NGOs is highly welcome
    Greetings to Eric

  8. I never had an issue with lining up the hole in my distributors when swapping gears but what I always do on ford units is drill the hole oversize to use a SBC roll pin as its stronger and wont break like the tiny ford pin does on occasion.
    Try it, you'll like it.

  9. Hello Eric,
I've been subbed to your channel for years now. I remember when you were in the beginning stages of the yellow Ford Fairmont, I too liked the Fairmont s.
Thanks for this video today, we both are a little more grayer and seasoned 😊😊

  10. Ah so good to see her again! The Fairmont project is easily one of my favorite Youtube projects series. I've watched the series a few times and always so satisfying. Eric, Hope you're doing well my friend.
